Cooper Union Summer STEM Program Final Presentation
The Loisaida Center will soon be home to a newly retrofitted production studio, in part thanks to the efforts of STEM students and educators in the Cooper Union Summer STEM 2022 Program.
In the 3-week "Next-Gen Construction Materials" course, led by STEM Teaching Fellow Brandon Bunt and Cooper Union student teaching assistants, 9th and 10th grade students explored designing and growing acoustic paneling using mycelium (mushrooms) to help us finish retrofitting our studio for improved sound performance. The class covered sustainability and alternative material use in construction, an introduction to mycology, basics of acoustic design, and tools to design acoustic panels and molds to grow them.
Mycelium paneling is preferable to mainstream options because it is biodegradable such that future updates to the theater will not generate landfill waste.
The students showcased their work and completed mycelium tiles at the Cooper Union Summer STEM final presentation on Thursday, August 18th (shown in above photos).
Special thanks to the director of STEM Outreach at Cooper Union, and the director of this Summer STEM program, Professor Elizabeth Waters!

Ecolibrium Energy Efficiency Survey
Take it now!
| |
|
Is your fridge or AC always running but never cool? Tell us about it!
We've created a survey to determine just how many home appliances in the neighborhood are due for an upgrade. Not only do older refrigerators and air conditioners waste energy, they can also leak harmful refrigerants which contribute to climate change. Help us take count of how many of us would benefit from new energy efficient appliances that can help lower our monthly electricity bills.
It only takes 5-10 minutes to complete. Take the survey now!

La Cocina de Loisaida is a series of monthly hands-on cooking classes where we celebrate the rich cultural traditions of Puerto Rican cuisine. Longtime Lower East Side resident and local caterer María Bido shares the recipes and techniques passed down by her abuela — all based in authentic Puerto Rican flavors and ingredients from Essex Market.
This series is presented by Loisaida Inc. in partnership with Essex Market, with the collective mission to preserve and pass down culinary heritage from the Lower East Side community. We invite all ages and abilities to join us for these unique, fun, and celebratory cooking classes at Essex Market.

Carlos "Chino" Garcia: The Godfather of Loisaida
Carlos "Chino" Garcia continues to inspire community leaders, musicians, activists and artists in the Lower East Side and beyond.
Chino's activism in the neighborhood and his commitment to the preservation of our Puerto Rican heritage and culture dates back decades. Chino has done it all, from sweat equity and squatting to helping community residents create the first LES community gardens.
Chino is the co-founder of the former CHARAS - El Bohio, a key cultural community center operating inside the now abandoned building of P.S. 64 on 9th street between Avenue B and Avenue C. At CHARAS, Chino and leadership led many community development initiatives, conducted experiments with geodesic domes and renewable energy, as well as addressing food and social justice issues through art, music, and theater.
Watch his interview now on LoisaidaTV!

If you are able to, please consider donating to Chino's GoFundMe fundraiser!
Chino needs help from the community. Over the past year he has had numerous medical issues.
He is looking for a decent, affordable senior assisted living facility in the community that he loves and would appreciate your assistance to help secure that housing. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing his campaign!
