Your Neighborhood
2018Feb Neighbor
Making a difference in your community can begin right in your own neighborhood-by being a good neighbor. In this series there are ideas on creating your dream neighborhood.

Get to know your neighbors.
Getting to know your neighbors is the first step in making a difference.
Common ways that neighbors get to know each other include going to the same church, having kids that attend the same school or are on the same sports teams, carpooling together, or simply saying hello as you are walking your dog or otherwise out and about in the neighborhood. And remember: Nothing builds relationships faster than a simple smile, wave, or hello!

Share and do random acts of kindness.
If you have extra time, shovel their walks or rake their leaves. If you grow a garden or have fruit trees, take bags of your bounty around to your neighbors. If your neighbor is in need of an extra ingredient, give more than they are asking for. If they need a ride, take them. Help them carry in their groceries, lug heavy items up stairways, take in their garbage cans, or collect their mail when they are out of town. Feed or walk their pets. Talk to them. And really listen.

Destination: Lancaster Central Market
2018Feb Destination

Lancaster Central Market is  the United States' oldest continuously operated farmer's market and stands in the heart of Amish country in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

The historic market has been in operation since the 1730s, and was granted permanent status by King George II in 1742. It remains popular today, and tourists flock here to purchase hand-crafted products and foods made by the local Amish community.

While the Pennsylvania Dutch wares might be the biggest draw for out-of-towners, locals appreciate the wide variety of imported goods sold alongside local produce, fresh flowers, just-caught seafood and hearty baked breads.

There are also great restaurants in the area for breakfast or lunch. Enjoy the day!

Rep of the Month: Michelle Cheeseman
Michele Cheeseman
Michele Cheeseman
As the wife of a former Navy Pilot, Michele Cheeseman has moved her family around a lot.  After moving to Thornton, Pa., Michele was visited by a Welcome Neighbor representative and really enjoyed the experience.

"The gift certificates and information Welcome
Neighbor provided during the visit were invaluable in helping my family make the transition after moving, yet again, to a new state," Michele remembers.

Michele has three grown children and a wonderful husband who is a Certified Financial Planner.  Previously she was a Physical Therapist specializing in geriatrics and the rehabilitation of brain-injured adults.  Now she enjoys meeting new residents as a Welcome Neighbor representative. She also enjoys reading, traveling and yoga.

Restaurant Review: Nudy's Cafe
Address: The Village at Painter's Crossing at  Routes 202 and 1, Chadds Ford, PA
Manager:  Corey Thorius
Telephone:  484-320-3032

NudysCafe Ambiance: This former Friendly's Restaurant is clean, sharp, and yet warm with nice lighting, roomy booths, tables for four, and a patio which will be very suitable for outdoor dining in warmer weather.

Service:  The service was first-class, quick and attentive, by a smiling waitress named Judy.

Experience:  We had very good bowls of New England clam chowder, giant size.  I added a half sandwich of chicken salad which again was quite large, served with tomato and lettuce, pickle spear and chips.  The chicken salad was too bland for me, but I am the type who puts stuff like Major Grey's chutney, curry, almonds, grapes, etc. in my chicken salad when I make it.  Bland is not a word I identify with.  In their defense, I noticed they have a Granny Smith apple, raisins and pecan chicken salad, which would have been more interesting to me if I could have substituted for the plainer choice-but I didn't ask.

Menu:  Their menu is quite extensive and has many unique offerings for eggs Benedict varieties, such as lobster benedict, crab benedict, and eggs Florentine benedict.  They also do lox and bagel with all the trimmings, always a breakfast plus for me.  They make big and hearty burgers, a great variety of sandwiches, salads and wraps, and a hearty bowl of soup for $3.50.  Some of the sandwiches sound really tantalizing.   I did not see any mention of desserts on the menu, but sometimes it's good to have temptation removed.

Total Bill:  The soup and ½ sandwich selection was $9.99; our total bill was $23.61 plus tip.

Additional Comments:  This can be a nice place to go, with probably no waiting line at least for now.  It is a welcome addition for a good place for lunch and breakfast especially.

Buffalo Mac 'n Cheese
This will be the last recipe I share in Neighborly News-unless I get a zillion likes and shares on Welcome Neighbor's Facebook page, since I need to finish writing my book, "Riding in the Rumble Seat," and get it published.  I need some feedback, so I'm going to "sweeten the pot" with an unusual contest:

Anne-Kitchen
Making Buffalo Mac & Cheese for SUPERBOWL! (but not in this photo LOL)

CONTEST:  ONE lucky person's name will be drawn from those who Like and Share the recipe on our Facebook page, and you must like and share by February 20 to be in the drawing.  The winner will receive this very homemade dish, prepared by me, Anne Pounds, delivered right to your home

The first time I tasted this I was at a food festival for dining professionals, and it was one of the outstanding tastes of the night.  What a great idea, I thought.  This has all the elements of hot wings in a substantial main dish:  chicken, celery, bleu cheese and lots of Frank's Hot Wing Sauce.
