WELCOME! | April 2024

April has arrived with a burst of unique events and happenings in our beautiful neighborhood! Find a local, literary experience at the 13th Annual Poetry and Barbeque event hosted by the Laura Riding Jackson Foundation that features readings by poets accompanied by great food, live music and camaraderie. More about this event in Neighborhood Happenings below. Speaking of poets, read our blog to learn about, Sean Sexton, a Vero Beach poet and writer, artist, and cattle rancher who lives on and operates his ranch that's listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Celebrating its seventh year, the Vero Beach Film Festival pairs independent film makers with audiences who seek new voices and fresh perspectives. It's where you can meet the artists behind the screens, enjoy a vintner dinner and explore the hidden gem of Vero Beach by watching films at various locations throughout the city.

If you are seeking a fresh perspective on home renovations, find inspirations and boundless possibilities at the Treasure Coast Home Show, a two-day event where you will walk away with new options for your home, farm or ranch. Also, you will see rows and rows of creativity at the Arts & Crafts Expo as part of this event.

In 1992, the Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation established itself as the literary heart of Indian River County.

For the 13th year, the Foundation is hosting Poetry and Barbecue held on April 13th in honor of National Poetry Month. The event combines great poetry, live music, delicious barbeque, a silent auction, and raffle that raises funds to support literary programming.

Before the barbecue, watch a performance of poetry readings by local poets followed by performances of featured national poets, George Bilgere and John Balaban.

The Laura (Riding) Jackson Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that is dedicated to preserving Laura's historic home and nurturing local writers through a series of literary offerings including writer's groups, summer camps, workshops and poetry festivals.

Leaving A Legacy

Treasure Hammock Ranch

While Vero Beach is known for its gorgeous beaches and high-end gated communities, there are large parts of Indian River county that host something quite the opposite - citrus orchards and cattle ranchlands. When Vero Beach pioneer Waldo Sexton arrived in the area, it was 1913, six years before the city was incorporated. At the time, Sexton was involved in the agricultural industry and came to Vero to sell farm equipment, specifically, an oxen-pulled deep tilling machine. He fell in love with the area and stayed put, purchasing 100 acres of beachside land and 120 acres west of town. By 1917, Sexton had planted 10,000 citrus trees on his mainland property. He also started a cattle ranch and dairy farm. Now, four generations later, the Sexton family still owns and operates their ranch and homestead called Treasure Hammock.  READ MORE
