LIVINGSTON, MT —Reilly Neill, candidate for the United States Senate in Montana, condemned the unauthorized U.S. military strike on Venezuela, noting that Congress never authorized war and neither Congress nor the American people were consulted. Neill said the decision was made unilaterally by the president, with Senator Daines offering full public support for the action in the name of Montanans, despite the absence of constitutional authority.
“Montanans of many political backgrounds are raising serious concerns,” Neill said. “Ranchers, veterans, teachers, and working families understand that freedom and democracy survive only when power is constrained, accountable, and lawful.” Neill emphasized that no president has the authority to direct military violence against a sovereign nation without congressional authorization, and that silence or support from members of Congress amounts to a surrender of their constitutional duty.
Neill spoke from personal experience, having spent time in Caracas and across Venezuela before and during the country’s democratic collapse. She witnessed the nationalization of businesses, the suppression of dissent, and mass protests involving millions of civilians calling for democratic accountability.
“Venezuela’s descent into authoritarian rule was not sudden,” Neill said. “It followed the erosion of institutions, the sidelining of legislative authority, and the normalization of military control.”
Venezuela, a country roughly twice the size of Montana, is now a fully militarized state where armed guards patrol civilian life and democratic institutions no longer function. Neill warned that bombing campaigns do not liberate people from repression or poverty and that illegal war only compounds human suffering.
“Armed force in the streets ends democracy.” she said.
Neill contrasted Daines’ support for the strike with growing concern voiced by Montanans who reject imperialism and endless war.
“Montana understands colonialism and its consequences,” Neill said. “From Tribal communities to rural towns, people know that democracy collapses when power goes unchecked.”
Neill pledged to defend congressional authority, voting rights, and constitutional governance, adding, “Montanans will not tolerate needless suffering, whether imposed abroad or at home.”
