A Note from our President
Another great year thanks to the hard work and dedication of each of you. Last January, we brought Steve Henson in as our new CEO with the mission to transition this company to the 4th generation. Valuing our employees and our operations, this last fall we hired a new Chief People Officer, John Herweh, and Chief Operations Officer, Scott Shaull. Each fitting our company values and already making a positive impact.
We continue to invest in the communities we reside in. From youth organizations, Forestry programs, to conservation groups, we’re committed to these communities and the surrounding forests, preparing to reside here for decades to come.
While every market turn has challenges, it’s always provided opportunities. We continue to explore acquisition opportunities and regions to expand into to strengthen and diversify this family company.
Thank you for your dedication and hard work. You’re the heartbeat of this organization.
— Jim Neiman

All Kids Bike
Montrose Forest Products donated bikes for 3 schools in Montrose to establish the All Kids Bike program. With the support of Walmart and BNSF, 7 elementary schools were sponsored in total, 5 in Montrose and 2 in Grand Junction. MFP team assembled and delivered to all 7 schools.
The All Kids Bike program strives to teach every kid in America how to ride a bike. A perfect fit to encourage the youth of our communities to enjoy the same beautiful outdoors we work every day to care for.

Restoration Has No Boundaries
As the fires in the west continue to worsen, the magnitude of the devastation far surpasses the capacity of industry in the surrounding areas. Hauling timber on rail was "retired" years ago, but due to the need, support from the USFS and conservation groups like NWTF, it's made a comeback, and making it's way to Devils Tower and Spearfish Forest Products.
Thank you team members for being adaptable, for your long hours and hard work to make this restoration project possible.

Montrose Moulder
The new moulder from Hill City was transported and installed in the Montrose planer to add value to our products. The tongue and groove pattern will run on 1'' spruce and distribute to stores like Home Depot.

Moulder in Gilchrist
The doucet moulder had a rocky start but the team worked to make it a success. Adding value to our products, and automation for safety, it also recovers the shavings and chips to utilize for other products.

50 Years of Service
Samson Bears
Maintenance Supervisor
Neiman Management
Samson joined Devils Tower Forest Products in March of 1972 as a green chair operator. As the company grew, he continued to expand his knowledge and expertise with different machines and automation. Samson has the institutional knowledge you can only learn through years of building and repairing equipment over multiple plant sites for 50 years. Samson continues to support our team across all four plant sites.
Samson is an avid hunter and no doubt will spend much of his retirement in the wilderness, hunting camping and spending time with his wife Deb, kids and grandchildren.

Retires after 40 years
Craig Hansen
Head Saw Filer
Gilchrist, OR
Craig joined Gilchrist Timber Company on May 17, 1983 as a saw filer. He had previously filed for Edward Hines Lumber Company for 10 years in Bates, Oregon. Craig raised his family in Gilchrist and then later in Crescent, while going through the different acquisitions the mill had: Crown Pacific, Interfor and finally, Gilchrist Forest Products. Craig retired in July 2022 but chose to come back part-time in August to teach the trainees and new Head Saw Filer about the frost notch on the bandsaws.
You will find Craig working on honey-do’s, hunting, traveling and fishing for Mackinaw at Odell Lake in his retirement.

Third Times The Charm
Mike Orndorff
Head Forester
Montrose, CO
Mike had previously planned his retirement twice and twice agreed to extend his employment for the betterment of our mill and the company. A true forester, Mike knows every forest, dirt road, and logger in Western Colorado. Through long days and hundreds of thousands of miles, he's ensured the mill had the logs we needed to operate. Mike will be retiring (for real this time) this spring.
Mike and his wife Florence plan on traveling, camping, and fishing in their retirement years. In between adventures we’re sure you’ll be able to find Mike in his vegetable garden or sighting in rifles for the next hunting season.

Richie's Retirement BBQ
Richie Cordell
Sawmill Superintendent
Spearfish, SD
After 41 years at the Sawmill in Spearfish we had to say goodbye to Richie. He started his career working as an Edger Operator and quickly worked his way up through the mill. He spent the last 32 years as the sawmill superintendent.
If you can't find Richie hanging out with his grandkids now that he is retired, he is sure to be out on the green swinging the clubs, or hunting and fishing. He also has been known to play a mean game of corn hole or other wise known as bags.

Andersen Windows Visit
Our relationship with Andersen Windows remains strong after 30 years. This last year the Andersen team spent the day with us, touring the Hulett mill and discussing opportunities for the future. These type of relationships give us the confidence to invest in more capital and remain confident in uncertain times.

A Note From Our CEO
I am very pleased with the progress we are making on several fronts. Having been selected to lead a National Pilot Project to help create fire resilient forests, and restore forest health, we have many in our company stepping up to the challenge in moving logs by rail, and embracing the need to be a strong partner with conservation groups like National Wild Turkey Association and others.
One of my core responsibilities as your CEO is to support our talented teams, and provide direction and vision for our family companies. To this point, we are going to embark immediately on a focused “drill down” on all our operations. This drill down will focus on cost management, but more importantly on improving our operational performance throughout the company. We will be preparing the company to weather the financial storms coming our direction (read here recession) and continue to position ourselves for future growth. Over the next six months we will dedicate ourselves to improving the “block and tackling” opportunities in improving efficiencies, and performance; and look for areas for further capital investments to strengthen our operations, to be poised for achieving strong financial performance in weakened market conditions. I am confident in our people to rise to this challenge.
This is a special company. We are a company of family values starting with integrity in all we say and do. As we boldly go forward into this challenging year, let us maintain these values. Let us also recommit in making safety a priority in all we do. Let us also be bold in addressing issues within our company. I have the highest expectation for open and honest communication in bringing issues forward that need attention and action. That is what healthy families, and companies do.
Lastly, I am excited for the future. After we “get our house in order”(over the next six months in tightening and improving operations)….we will continue to be well poised for future growth through continued mill expansions and potential acquisitions. We are a company full of “Grit” and determination. Jim and I are personally committed to do all we can do to make sure we have a smooth transition into another family generation of leaders…..We are in this for the long run.
Thank you to all our teams. I personally admire your loyalty and commitment. It is much appreciated.
Steve Henson
