Net Positive Water in the U.S.

It’s been an incredible first three months with Intel, and I’m thrilled to have had the opportunity to meet with so many of you to share more about Intel’s plans in Ohio to establish the Silicon Heartland.

Intel has manufactured its products in the United States for more than fifty years, and we have suppliers all over the Buckeye State. Just last week, we announced we are net positive for water here – an exciting sustainability milestone on our path to net positive water globally by 2030.

Intel Achieves Net Positive Water in United States

Intel announced this week that our operations in the United States are officially net positive on water use, meaning Intel restores more freshwater than we take in.

This achievement reflects Intel’s long-running commitment to conserve water and minimize our impact on the planet – one that goes beyond the bounds of Intel’s campuses and is motivated by more than just saving money on the water bill. We could not have achieved this milestone without our strong partnerships with environmental nonprofits and local government or our water stewardship investments.

In Arizona, where Intel has high-volume manufacturing operations, an Intel-funded project incentivized farmers near the Verde River to switch out crops that require heavy irrigation in the summer months for barley, which is harvested earlier in the year and requires less water.

“Intel was one of the first tech companies to make a public commitment around water restoration, but we’re not alone in this. In the years since we announced our water commitment, we’ve had conversations with other companies who have come to us for help or advice with setting their own water stewardship goals. Although water challenges are local, the partnerships, collective actions and investments are global.”

As part of the project, an investment in a local malt house lowered the transaction costs involved in malting barley, which can then be sold to local breweries that previously had to use out-of-state suppliers. More than fifteen Intel-funded projects restored 890 million gallons of water for Arizona in 2021.

Neighbor Update

Late last month, we met with our near neighbors to share updated renderings of what the campus will eventually look like, and how we’ll mitigate the impact of our construction. We also shared that and that a new full-time neighbor relations manager will be hired soon.

Site Enabling Work Starts

At the beginning of July, we took delivery of the land in Ohio for our new mega fab. Our construction organization has started early site enablement work with a team led by Gilbane.
