MEET OUR NEWEST
CLARE ROSE SABBATICAL RECIPIENTS
|
Congratulations to Kids Included Together and Torrie Dunlap, License to Freedom and Dilkhwaz Ahmed and Promises2Kids and Tonya Torosian on their selection to participate in this capacity building program. Valued at $50,000, each of these organizations will receive:
- Individual stipends and expenses of up to $40,000 to cover CEO salary, benefits, and travel to reflect or otherwise renew themselves in whatever manner they propose;
- Additional support of up to $5,000 fund for professional staff development. The purpose of the fund is to make it possible for other staff to have access to training programs or short-term leaves that might enhance their professional capacities.
- A fund of $2,500 to appropriately compensate or reward the leader or team that filled the role of the Executive Director during the sabbatical.
- Up to 12 consulting hours to aid in the preparation for, to be on-call during, and assist in the re-entry from the sabbatical.
Our thanks to Renato Paiva, Access Youth Academy; Don Stump, North County Lifeline; Je'net Kreitner, Grandma's House of Hope; and Barbara Reuer, Resounding Joy and John Malashock, Malashock Dance for joining Fieldstone and Clare Rose Foundation on the selection committee. Having past sabbatical participants join the selection and interview team is a hallmark of our program as we believe those with real-life experience understand best which organizations are ready for this powerful capacity building experience.
While COVID-19 has required the program to adapt, we were able to successfully complete one sabbatical in 2020 and two in 2021. Two previously scheduled sabbaticals will now begin in 2022. Our newest cohort will embark on their sabbatical journeys by June 2023 and June 2024. Due to these schedule changes, we will not offer the program in 2022. The Clare Rose Sabbatical will begin accepting applications again in January 2023. More information is available on our website.
To date, we have provided 27 sabbatical grants to local nonprofit leaders and their organizations.
Please join us in welcoming KIT, License to Freedom, and Promises2Kids to our Clare Rose Sabbatical Family!

Leadership Reading Groups:
Group 6 Forming Now - Starting in September
Author's Insights 2021
|
Next Leadership Reading Group Forming Now
Research has shown that reading has always been an essential component of leadership development (HBR, Feb. 2016). However, even with the best of intentions, it is often difficult to get to or finish all of the books competing for our attention. With a goal of creating well-read nonprofit leaders while imparting facilitation skills and building trusted relationships among nonprofit leaders, the Leadership Reading Group offers a unique opportunity to study and develop leadership in a communal setting.
Meetings will be held from 11:30am to 1:30pm on the second Tuesday of each month September through January. The program will start on-line with virtual sessions and will move to in-person sessions in January if the change is allowed by public health guidelines. In-person meetings will take place at the Fieldstone Leadership Network San Diego office at 5060 Shoreham Place, Suite 350, San Diego, CA 92122.
All members of our Reading Group program will be able to participate in our Author's Insights event.
Author's Insights 2021 will feature Kimmery Martin, author of The Antidote for Everything.
Kimmery Martin is an emergency medicine doctor-turned novelist whose works of medical fiction have been praised by The Harvard Crimson, Southern Living, The Charlotte Observer and The New York Times, among others.
In this whip-smart and timely novel, two doctors travel a surprising path when they must choose between treating their patients and keeping their jobs. In this work of fiction, Martin provides the reader with the opportunity to explore issues of loyalty, vocation, integrity and how to respond when the impact of our actions does not have the desired effect on a problem.
Special thanks to Leslye and Scott Lyons for making this learning opportunity possible.
If you are interested in joining our 2021 Leadership Reading Group, please join our interest list by emailing us or register using the application online. Next group starts in September 2021.

SUPPORTING BOARD DIVERSITY THROUGH RECRUITMENT
Introducing the NP Board Exchange
|
To assist nonprofit organizations in efforts to identify and diversify their governing boards, Fieldstone Leadership Network San Diego is pleased to share information on nonprofit organizations in the market for new board members. The Nonprofit Board Exchange, modeled after our Career Exchange, is offered in alignment with our value of reciprocity and in the spirit of expanding the field of those interested in serving in a volunteer governing role with a nonprofit organization.
Currently, board openings are shared through a weekly email sent to Network members and others in the broader nonprofit community. We expect to unveil a new website to support this effort soon.
|
|
If you have an opening that you would like us to share, please email the board member announcement as a website link , PDF or Word document with “how to apply” information embedded into the document to us. If you would like to receive our weekly email featuring job openings and board member opportunities in San Diego’s nonprofit, please add your name to our interest list using this link.

RE-OPENING RESOURCES
NONPROFIT EVENT CALENDAR
Add Your Events to Avoid Conflicts with Other NPOs
|
COVID-19 forced nonprofit organizations to cancel or postpone significant fundraising events. As we begin to make our way back to in-person events and in response to the requests of Network Members, we have created a calendar to assist nonprofits throughout San Diego in avoiding critical conflicts as they consider new dates for their important events.
With a goal of creating a central location to serve as a resource to our local nonprofit community, the calendar will showcase events of local San Diego nonprofit organizations. It will be updated on a continual basis.
To participate and add an event to the calendar, please email us with the following information:
- Organization Name
- Contact Person
- Date and Time
- Location of Event (venue name)
- Type of Event (gala, dinner, auction, sporting event)

Executive Learning Groups
Back in Person in 2022
NEW Online Offering
|
After two years of online learning groups, we are excited about the prospect of meeting together IN PERSON for our 2022 offerings, which will begin in January.
Our learning groups are usually the first program leaders join and they sell out each year. The program carries a 98% referral rate! If you are interested in joining us in 2022, join our interest list.
OFFERING A NEW LG OPPORTUNITY
Due to the success of our online program and to accommodate numerous requests, we are considering the continuation of an online offering of our Learning Group program. This leadership experience would serve nonprofit leaders working with or in partnership our FLNSD member organizations outside of San Diego. If you have colleagues who you think would be interested in participating, please let us know HERE . We are looking for 10 nonprofit CEO and 10 Leadership Team Members for each group.
Our experience re-designing and hosting these programs online as a result of COVID-19 has opened up new opportunities for us to answer the call of nonprofit leaders for a trusted community of peers to learn and lead with. Because of this work, we believe the online version of our 28-year in-person learning group experience is an equally compelling learning and relationship building opportunity for all nonprofit leaders. We are excited about this prospect and would be grateful for your help in referring your co-workers and colleagues to help make this plan a reality.

Executive Coaching Program
|
Every nonprofit leader benefits from a good coaching relationship – growth, guidance, friendship, and success for both parties as each sharpens and strengthens his or her skill in the process of working with each other. The bonds of coach and coachee can be as close as those in any rewarding professional relationship because they are built on trust, mutual goals, and a shared commitment to making the relationship work. These kinds of bonds are particularly valuable in the nonprofit arena, where senior executives are often torn between the competing demands of clients, donors, board, and staff, without having a peer for feedback.
If you are interested in working with a Coach in 2022 you will find more information and an application on our website.
Program starts in January 2022

Searching for the Heart of
Social Justice in
Historic and Hallowed Places
September 21st to September 24th, 2022
Montgomery, Alabama
Join us for a unique opportunity to learn experientially, reflect personally, and engage in communal conversations about equity in the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement. This is a meaningful opportunity to build on your Equity Journey experience or to start your work in the areas of diversity, equity and inclusion.
This retreat visits historic sites to ground and inspire brave conversations about how our past informs issues of today and the future. It draws on Circle of Trust principles to create time and space for questions about our own roles in advancing social justice within the San Diego nonprofit community and beyond.
The four-day experience includes time to visit and reflect on historic sites ranging from the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery. It will support nonprofit leaders in identifying or deepening their own practices of equity and inclusion and build a trusted network of local leaders who can continue to learn and work together on diversity, equity and inclusion challenges and opportunities in our local community. The possibilities are endless. You are invited to seriously consider this unique leadership experience.
Leading the retreat will be a team of seasoned nonprofit professionals who bring diverse backgrounds and experiences to the challenges of diversity, equity and inclusion - Lee Ann Kim, Barry J. Schultz, Sue Carter Kahl and Janine Mason.
