Pharmacist Focus: Genitourinary Disorders - Urinary Incontinencefocus
By Dustin Chandler, PharmD Candidate 2020
Belmont University College of Pharmacy

One major issue that affects the United States population is genitourinary disorders. The biggest reason these disorders are such an issue to our patients stems mainly from how many disorders fall under this category. For example, acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, bladder cancer, ovarian cancer, sexual dysfunction, obstructive uropathy, benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), over active bladder, urinary tract infections, or any infection of the parts can all be classified as genitourinary disorders. It would be a monumental task to do an overview of all disorders, so this article will focus on urinary incontinence which affects approximately 33 million  Americans1 (roughly 10%), with a large portion of them being older and women. Urinary incontinence occurs quite frequently in adults as they age.

Free Resource - Insulin Supplies bdsyringe

One of our network partners, East Tennessee State University (ETSU) Charitable Pharmacy in Johnson City, TN, recently shared a resource for insulin syringes and needles that we are happy to share with the entire network! BD's sample distribution program provides free insulin syringes and needles to facilities. Through BD's sample website, ordering is simple; just find and select the quantity of the desired items, fill out contact and shipping information, and submit! Each site is able to receive up to four boxes of insulin syringes and four boxes of pen needles each month, per provider. Through the use of the provider's NPI or license number, sites can access this free resource. If you have the staff resources, you can enter multiple providers information to get a good stock of syringes and needles to keep on site for those patients who are unable to afford these supplies.

The team at the Dispensary of Hope loves hearing these best practices and sharing them throughout the network. During the December 4th webinar ( Register), we will discuss more resources like this that your facility can implement to help care for the low income and uninsured.
