Safety Corner
Brought to you by:
Electrical Safety
Electrocutions are the fourth leading cause of fatal injury among construction workers in the United States. In many cases workers touched metal objects that had become energized through contact with live electrical equipment, wiring, or overhead power lines.
Many people are under the assumption that low voltage means low hazard. This is rarely the case. As little as 75 milliamps is enough to stop a human heart. To put this into perspective, 1 amp equals 1000 milliamps. So, with saws, drills, and compressors pulling 15 to 30 amps, not taking the proper precautions can lead to severe injury.
Daily inspections of electrical tools and cords before use can greatly reduce the chances of employee electrical injuries and fatalities. Ensuring machinery and power tools are properly grounded or double insulated, checking all extension cords for wear and damage before use, keeping at least 10 feet away from overhead powerlines, and keeping metal objects away from live electrical circuits are great ways to help reduce the chance of electrocution.
We recommend training employees to recognize electrical hazards before they are exposed.
The Team at PGM Safety Services is available to help you recognize electrical hazards at the workplace and assist with employee safety. For assistance, please contact PGM Safety Services, an affiliate company of Pro Group Management, and we will be happy to assist. You can visit us at www.pgmnv.com or call (800) 859-3177.
