Wildfire Planning Efforts Ramp Up in Truckee

Long recognized as a tourist destination, Truckee faces unique challenges in wildfire prevention and mitigation efforts, including those posed by seasonal population fluctuations and heavy recreational use. On the heels of Measure T, Truckee Fire Protection District’s successful tax measure to dedicate local funding for wildfire prevention, several efforts are currently underway to ensure that projects and programs align with community priorities and needs.

Last July, the Nevada County Office of Emergency Services (OES) hired a County Wildfire Coordinator, a brand-new position charged with getting on the ground in communities across Nevada County to better understand what is working, what isn’t, and what is needed for our communities to be wildfire resilient.

Supervisors Support Consolidation of Three Fire Districts

Last week, the Nevada County Board of Supervisors voted to support the consolidation of three fire districts--Rough & Ready Fire Protection District, Penn Valley Fire Protection District, and Nevada County Consolidated Fire District--into one combined district.

The Board also approved the fire district chiefs’ request for up to $1 Million in temporary gap funding to operate Rough & Ready Fire Station #59 while the reorganization effort is underway. The Board vote assures continued fire protection for the Rough & Ready community as their fire station was slated to close permanently on June 30.

"Through Our Eyes": Nevada County Camera Club Photos on Display at Eric Rood Center

Nevada County Arts Council and the County of Nevada are proud to announce the opening of “Through Our Eyes,” an exhibition of photographs by members of the Nevada County Camera Club. The exhibit is on display at the Eric Rood Administrative Center through September 18th.

“Through Our Eyes” features images taken at locations throughout the GVNC Cultural District by Camera Club members who were invited to see the community in new ways as part of the club’s “photo challenge.”

Yesterday, August 16th, the Nevada County Regional Dispatch Center (RDC) celebrated its one year anniversary in its new home. Dispatchers at RDC handle all non-emergency and 911 calls for the entire County of Nevada.

The Nevada County Board of Supervisors declared August as Child Support Awareness Month in Nevada County. “At the heart of our mission in Child Support lies a deep commitment to understanding and addressing the unique needs of every family we serve. Just as each child is a one-of-a-kind individual, so too are the circumstances and challenges faced by their families.” Mike Dent, Director of Housing and Child Support Services.

Still Time to File for FEMA Assistance for February Storm Damage

Residents and businesses that sustained economic loss from the February storms have just two weeks left to file for reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The deadline for filing a claim with FEMA is September 1st.

Meet our New Assistant Clerk-Recorder/Registrar of Voters

The Nevada County Clerk-Recorder/Registrar of Voters is pleased to add Corey O'Hayre to the team.

O'Hayre is the new Assistant Clerk-Recorder/Registrar of Voters for Nevada County. He has spent the last five years working in the Clerk-Recorder and Elections office in Douglas County, Colorado and was serving as Lead Elections Specialist before coming to Nevada County. He has a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from Seattle Pacific University. He looks forward to working with everyone at the County.

Staff Member Appointed to Rural Action Caucus

Jeff Thorsby, a senior management analyst in Nevada County's Clerk of the Board office, has been appointed to the National Association of Counties’ Rural Action Caucus.

The caucus is the “voice of rural counties before Congress and the White House,” according to the association's website. Members of the caucus are dedicated to “solving the unique issues impacting local communities and rural economic development, including making daily decisions impacting roughly 60 million Americans,” the website said.

“I am honored to help support the terrific work of the Board to advocate for the issues of critical importance for rural counties and Nevada County specifically," Thorsby said of his appointment.
