Congressional Actions Essential On Tax Renewal

Agricultural producers and taxpayers in general are anxiously watching the new Congress as they gear up for renewing the tax provisions in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.  In part 1 of a series, Samantha Ayoub, of the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) economic team has focused in on the details of how the tax provisions relate to the consequences if the renewal process falls short.  This week’s Market Intel report concentrates on these elements:

  • Individual tax provisions
  • Qualified business income
  • Capital expensing provisions
  • Estate taxes

“The majority of farm profit nationwide is taxed as a farmer’s or rancher’s individual income, so changes to the individual tax code significantly impact farm tax liabilities.” Ayoub wrote, adding, “The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act individual income provisions that reduced the average farm tax liability across farms of all sizes include reduced federal income tax rates, new income ranges for each rate, increased limits for the alternative minimum tax (AMT) and limits on personal deductions. Combined, these provisions have the single largest impact on farmers and ranchers’ tax liability.”

American Farm Bureau Federation Policy Set For Coming Year

In addition to Nevada Farm Bureau’s two voting delegates for the 106th Annual American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) meeting, there was a crew of 18 others with Silver State ties who attended the sessions in San Antonio, Texas.  On January 28th the voting delegates met and deliberated to decide the organization’s national policy.

The Saturday – Monday program of events included national competition for several Young Farmers and Rancher contest.  Sunday’s (Jan. 26 ) schedule included the annual address by AFBF President Zippy Duvall and honoring a couple of notable persons with Farm Bureau’s version of Lifetime recognition.

Monday’s (Jan. 27) schedule included additional workshops and information sessions which dealt with a number of timely topics, such as the upcoming tax cliff, strategies for promoting Farm Bureau and a farm bill panel discussion which included House Agriculture Committee Chair Congressman GT Thompson of Pennsylvania and Ranking Member Representative Angie Craig of Minnesota.

Peter Rolfe, DVM Is Nevada’s New State Veterinarian

The Nevada Department of Agriculture welcomes Peter Rolfe, DVM, as the new State Veterinarian. Dr. Rolfe will be joining the Nevada Department after previously serving as a regulatory veterinarian for the Colorado Department of Agriculture.

“We are very excited to welcome Dr. Rolfe as part of our team at the NDA,” said Director J.J. Goicoechea. “His regulatory and thorough veterinary background will be a great asset to the work we’re doing in the state.”

He holds a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Oregon State University, and brings over two decades of experience in large animal practice. Originally from the Reno area, Dr. Rolfe looks forward to being back in the Silver State.

Nevada Dairy and Poultry Exhibitions Cancelled Until Further Notice

As Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) continues to spread across Nevada and the West, the decision has been made to ban all Nevada Poultry (birds and eggs) as well as Dairy Cattle Exhibitions at shows or fairs until further notice.  In addition, the Nevada Department of Agriculture is stressing for all dairy and poultry producers that they practice very strict biosecurity activities on their farms and premises in order to avoid contracting this devasting disease.  HPI can be easily transmitted from contaminated equipment, vehicles and even from clothing.  It is important to report any cases of increased mortality in poultry and clinical symptoms in dairy cattle promptly to your veterinary and the Nevada Department of Agriculture’s State Veterinarian office (775) 353-3755.

The Nevada Department of Agriculture is continuing to monitor the disease spread here in Nevada and throughout neighboring states.  Both dairy operations and poultry producers are experiencing significant issues.  With increased biosecurity, rapid reporting of new disease detections and appropriate disease responses, it will greatly assist in being able to get a handle on the disease sooner and protect agricultural producers and their birds and animals.

For more detailed information and recommendations for dealing with HPAI, we encourage your review of this United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) link.
