We've been fortunate to participate in many exciting announcements and events this month. Governor Sisolak's announcement of the partnership between GOWINN, Nevada’s public education institutions, and Amazon Web Service will strengthen our capacity to train Nevada's emerging workforce across the state with skills that can be applied in the foreseeable future. It was invigorating to participate in the Spring Job fair at the Las Vegas Convention Center, where more than 6,000 job seekers had the opportunity to explore hundreds of employers, and service and training providers. This month, GOWINN also completed the first round of the new industry sector council meetings, administered a Governor’s Workforce Development Board meeting with more than a dozen new members including a new chair and vice-chair, and administered an NPWR advisory committee meeting. Great work is being done on many fronts with many partners. You’ll find several opportunities to engage and calls to action in this edition, and we'd love your help getting the word out. Please also remember to share items you need help distributing as we know it takes a village.

As the demand for talent remains high, employers are expanding benefits to help families balance priorities. The Children’s Cabinet is working to analyze current employer trends for family-friendly benefits in Nevada. The more companies that respond, the better the benchmarking will be, enabling better-targeted resources.
We’d appreciate your sharing this with your employer networks and any others you think may further spread the word.
The 6-question survey can be completed in less than 2 minutes. All data will be kept confidential and used to benchmark businesses by industry. Submitters can remain anonymous if desired.

Nevada Help Desk has partnered with the City of Las Vegas to host 60 teens for 60-days to complete 60 tech-related projects this summer. Nevada Help Desk students are accepting work requests from businesses of all sizes for Digital Marketing, Multimedia Production, Mobile App Development, Graphic & Website Design, Digital Video Magazines, and much more.

NACTE Call for Presenters Extended! |

The Annual Nevada Association for Career and Technical Education (NACTE) Conference will be held July 19th - 22nd in person at Harvey's Lake Tahoe. This special event will focus on the professional development of career and technical education professionals, including instructors, administrators, and career guidance and school counselors from both secondary and postsecondary CTE programs and institutions.

Fallon Naval Air Station Job Fair |
EDAWN will be taking part in a job fair at the Fallon Naval Air Station in June and is seeking employers that are interested in recruiting service members transitioning out of the military, or their partners, who may be looking for work.

Governor Sisolak appointed several new members to the Governor's Workforce Development Board (GWDB). The Governor also appointed a new Chair and Vice-Chair. Leadership from both houses of the Nevada legislature also appointed representatives to the board.

First Round of New Industry Sector Council Meeting Complete |

Already, trends within and across sectors are beginning to take shape. Meeting recordings, supporting documents, and summary reports will be posted on the Sector Council Meeting page when available. Meetings for the remainder of 2022 are also published there and agendas will be added when available.

Nevada Robotics Week/Month on Nepris Was A Success! |
|
From the DARPA Subterranean Grand Challenge to Whale Snot, students across the country logged in to hear some examples of robotics applications with connections to the Silver State and engage with professionals who design and work with these awesome machines. There were also opportunities to learn more about some of the resources available for them to apply right in their classrooms. |

NPWR Advisory Committee Meetings |

The Nevada P-20 to Workforce Research Data System (NPWR) advisory committee has big things in store! Work is currently underway to expand data partner participation which will result in more accurate outputs and more robust research capacity. Additionally, while a number of standard reports, including Average Wage by Industry and Career Earnings, are currently available, a new research portal is being developed that will greatly enhance the application of this robust resource. |

Amazon Web Services Nevada Partnership Announced |
|
On April 6, 2022, Governor Sisolak announced the partnership between GOWINN, the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE), the Nevada Department of Education (NDE), and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to train, upskill and certify 2,500 Nevadans in cloud computing in the next three years. The collaboration will provide access to cloud computing education courses and certifications for instructors at every public higher education institution and public high school across the state.
“I am pleased to announce this new collaboration with AWS. Nevada is leading the nation by having K-12, higher education institutions and government workforce agencies working together to incorporate AWS education programs and cloud computing into their academic and workforce programs to help prepare students for cloud careers,” said Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak. “Nevada will benefit greatly, and Nevadans will have access to high paying and meaningful careers.”

Thousands attend Spring Job Fair at the Las Vegas Convention Center |

GOWINN’s Grants and Programs Manager and Grants and Contracts Manager met with job seekers at the Spring Job Fair at the Las Vegas Convention Center on April 15. The event served 6,100 jobseekers and employers reported that more than 450 jobs were offered on the spot. The GOWINN table was busy all day as staff shared the training opportunities available through Project SANDI. |

New Research Supports Operations for Second-Chance Employers |
|
People with criminal convictions often have trouble finding work and face double-digit unemployment rates. Yet employers would be more willing to hire them under certain conditions, says research by Zoë Cullen, Assistant Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School.
Employers are often wary of hiring workers with past convictions, leading to double-digit unemployment rates for formerly incarcerated people. That reluctance has hit Black Americans particularly hard since they have seen historically higher arrest rates, often fueled by racial discrimination, research shows.
But it might be a good time to rethink those hiring practices and the biases underpinning them, suggests new research by Harvard Business School Assistant Professor Zoë Cullen. After all, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to create challenges for companies attempting to fill job openings as record numbers of people quit their jobs in search of new opportunities in a hot labor market.
