Invasive Warriors Wanted:
A group of dedicated residents has stepped up to start to removing "Invasive Species" that threaten the health of our beloved Glenmore woods and yards. Their initial effort will be to fully eradicate the invasive "Tree of Heaven", but they need your help - become a Invasive Warrior.
Please review this excellent article from 'Blue Ridge PRISM', an organization devoted to educating the Virginians about invasive species in the Commonwealth. It describes the dangers of allowing the "Tree of Heaven" and the 'Spotted Lantern Fly', which the tree hosts, to spread. Photos, descriptions and treatment options are described.
However, all we are asking from you at this point is help to identifying any of these trees, young or mature, that you can find and send details of their location to our Team Leader, Liza Moorman, either by email to liza.moorman@gmail.com or message her at 434-465-0614. Then the team will deal with it appropriately.
PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE IT OR CUT IT DOWN, as special methods are required to prevent the roots from spreading more growth. We also need to confirm the species, because the leaves of the young Tree of Heaven are very similar to Black Walnut, Butternut, and 2 types of Sumac (as you will see in the article).
And, if you would like to volunteer to join Glenmore's team of "Invasive Warriors", send a message to Liza - we will be delighted if you can join us!! Thank you for whatever help you can give.
Next Month: we'll tackle another notorious threat, the "Autumn Olive".
