Succession planning is often delayed or derailed due to dysfunction in the family. When a group struggles to work effectively together, there are three options: 1) Figure out how to work through it. 2) Ignore it. 3) Decide that you will not work together. This option may mean separating assets so that family members can continue to farm – just not together. |

David Strege – Gold Medal Champion
After months of preparation and practice, David Strege traveled to Louisville, Kentucky over the Memorial Day weekend to compete in the USA Volleyball Open National Championships. David played on a 60’s men’s division team called Federal Resources. And they won the Gold Medal!
To add to the excitement, David was selected to the All-Tournament Team in the Men’s 60s Division. Even with an expanded break due to the pandemic, the athletic prowess of David and his teammates enabled them to claim the ultimate 1st place victory.
We asked David a few questions about his experience.
What is your motivating factor(s) to continue to compete in volleyball in your 60s?
It provides an opportunity for physical activity and the competition encourages me to stay in shape and work with my teammates to do the best we can. It is very fun to play against kids your own age! I realize that getting slower and not jumping as high is all relative.
I’m on a quest to medal in national and international tournaments for every year I’ve played volleyball. This is my 43rd year playing and so far, have medaled in 39 national and international tournaments with 23 of those being gold. There are two more national tournament sessions this year and then World Master Games in Japan in May 2022 to defend our world title that we won in New Zealand.
What was the highlight of this year’s USA Volleyball Open National Championships?
After not seeing most of these people for two years, a highlight was visiting with people in the gym and catching up on how they are doing.
What is the most rewarding aspect of playing competitive volleyball?
Three of our key players couldn’t attend this year. We struggled the first couple of days getting used to some new teammates. We still won all of our matches, but that required many times going three games in a best two-out-of-three match format.
Everyone stayed positive and the last day of our three-day session, it all came together for us in playoffs. We played really well and won the gold medal after beating the Northern California team that we normally meet in the finals at national tournaments. I was honored to be selected to the all-tournament team by my peers.

Lauryn Woerdeman is Syverson Strege’s part-time summer intern in marketing and communications. Lauryn will be working remotely and assisting with website projects, social media, and other marketing projects. Lauryn is a Business Management major at Iowa State University. In her spare time, she enjoys playing the piano, reading, running, the outdoors, and time with friends and family. Welcome, Lauryn!
