Bringing Back The

Impossible With AirCaps

By Nirbhay Narang

Michael Small is a retired cardiothoracic surgeon who spent multiple decades repairing hearts before hanging up his scalpel. A Cornell graduate, now ninety years old, he lives in a picturesque, wood-lined home in Pacific Heights with grand views of the bay, sharing it with his wife, a surprisingly plump cat named Boris, and frequent visits from his two daughters.

An erstwhile member of the San Francisco Choral Society, singing has always been a part of Michael’s life. That is, until his hearing began to degrade - making it difficult for Michael to not only participate in his choir but also straining the casual conversations and dinner parties that once formed the heart of his social life.

In early 2025, his hearing had deteriorated to the point that Michael had to give up his spot in the society. Michael described this as a “painful” experience. He lost both the music and the sense of camaraderie that came with being a part of the choir.

Soup’s On!

How NOT To Start a Business

By Evelyn Preston, Money Lady

With all the costly changes in the economy and little relief in sight, more and more seniors consider creating their own business.

Some already consult, work part-time or enjoy stints in retail if only for the discounts. Others putter away convinced that their brainstorm is bound to succeed as the next Shark Tank winner.

I’ve been there, done that, ‘though I rarely divulge a manic misstep into the esoteric world of start-ups! Actually, there were two of us, already experienced business women mid-careers with the Silicon Valley fantasy of a go go "IPO."

How could we fail!

Why Selling a Home "As-Is" Is The Smart Call For Most Long-Time Bay Area Homeowners

By Seb Frey, Compass

For hundreds of thousands of Bay Area homeowners considering a move, the conventional wisdom suggests they fix up the home before selling to “get top dollar.”

But the research shows this approach usually ends up costing money, not making money, when the home is sold. According to multiple studies, most home improvement projects fail to deliver a full return on investment. Major kitchen and bath remodels, for example, often recoup only 50–70% of their cost. That means a $40,000 upgrade could result in a $12,000–$20,000 loss.

Instead, many savvy homeowners are choosing to sell as-is, with prep work concentrated on “high-ROI” improvements like deep cleaning, yard refreshes, and decluttering.

Not only is this approach faster and less stressful—it usually nets sellers more because they skip costly delays and hit the market at a price point that is in much higher demand.

Local real estate expert Seb Frey specializes in helping long-time local homeowners sell as-is with no repairs, no staging and no drama—just a smart strategy for maximum equity extraction.

The Stark Beauty of The Faroe Islands

By Don Mankin, travel writer

The wind blasted me as I neared the edge of the cliff. Leaning into the gust, I struggled to keep on my feet. Deciding that my safety was more important than another spectacular view, I reluctantly turned back.

I was in the Faroe Islands, an archipelago of 18 islands in the North Atlantic about midway between Norway and Iceland.

"Is a Senior Living Community Right For Me?"

"I'm a widow living alone at home in my 80's and thinking about moving into a senior living community."

The good news: the SF Bay Area offers plenty of senior living options from Independent and Assisted Living to full Continuing Care. The South Bay, in particular, has seen many new communities open in recent months

The hard part? Choosing the right one. Here are a few suggestions

to help you get started:

Care needs. Now and later

Choose a community that fits today and gives you options as your needs change. Look for services you may need down the road—meals, personal care or even memory support.

Costs and what’s included

Monthly fees vary widely in the Bay Area. Know exactly what you’re paying for—meals, transportation, housekeeping—and what’s extra. Ask about annual increases and refund policies.

Lifestyle and community fit

Visit at different times. Meet residents, try a meal and get a feel for the culture. You’re not just choosing an apartment, you’re choosing how you want to live.
