New #justB stories out now!
Real personal stories are the most important and effective way we communicate to the world why it is important to care about hepatitis B.

By telling these stories we are combating stigma and discrimination and personifying the reasons why we need to keep working toward a cure. These five new stories are beacons of hope and we are so proud of our brave #justB storytellers.

Consult corner: What blood tests are important?
Welcome to Consult Corner, where we answer some of the most commonly asked questions!

This month's question: What blood tests are important to diagnose and evaluate my hepatitis B infection?

In order to understand your hepatitis B status, it is important that your doctor order the hepatitis B blood panel. This panel includes three basic biomarkers, but only one sample of blood is needed. Make sure you request a written copy of your blood test results so that you fully understand what tests were ordered and the actual results of each. Also, be sure to have your doctor clearly explain the results to you so that you fully understand your situation.

The three-part blood test includes the following:
- Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)
- Hepatitis B surface antibody (HBsAb or anti-HBs)
- Hepatitis B core antibody (HBcAb or anti-HBc)

Learn more about these tests here.

Pennsylvania DOH highlights the importance of
viral hepatitis awareness
The Pennsylvania Department of Health joined advocates and residents with lived experiences on June 7, 2022, to highlight the importance of viral hepatitis awareness along with the success of syringe services programs.

Our Senior Vice President, Chari A. Cohen, DrPH, MPH, was among the speakers. "There are vaccines available to prevent hepatitis A and B and medicines to treat hepatitis B and C," she said.
"Bringing this awareness to all regions of the state, combined with syringe service programs is critical as we work towards eliminating viral hepatitis in Pennsylvania."

The unvirtuous cycle of discrimination affecting people with hepatitis B: a multi-country qualitative assessment of key-informant perspectives
Freeland C, Mendola L, Cheng V, Cohen C, Wallace J
The authors, including our senior vice president, Chari A. Cohen, DrPH, MPH, and our public health program director, Catherine Freeland, MPH, set out to investigate and describe hepatitis B related discrimination, document such discrimination worldwide and provide initial recommendations for future work on HBV discrimination using key informant interviews. The team identified potential key informants for interviews, such as community health leaders, public health scientists, physicians and researchers, many of whom were also living with hepatitis B. They were asked to describe their experiences with discrimination and challenges for people living with HBV.

The 17 people interviewed discussed explicit experiences with discrimination, how they reacted emotionally and the impact on health associated with the “unvirtuous cycle of discrimination.” All reported substantial quality of life implications and often poorer health outcomes resulting from discrimination. Those interviewed talked about the significant impact of HBV discrimination across education-based services in several countries plus military exclusion or removal for those found to have hepatitis B. The authors found evidence that hepatitis B discrimination has a significant impact, and it occurs in many aspects of life from education to job-seeking, to marriage and to travel among various countries. This study demonstrates the need for future research that can lead to policy change and protections for people living with and impacted by hepatitis B.
