16 Tech: A Summer of Research & Discovery
- Video produced in partnership with Derek Tow, owner of T he South 40 Media Production and The Box Media Space
located in the Riverside neighborhood near 16 Tech
While new buildings and roads are being constructed in the 16 Tech Innovation District, new connections also are being created with neighborhood schools and residents.

The Indiana Biosciences Research Institute (IBRI) and BioCrossroads are among the first tenants that will move into 16 Tech's Innovation Building 1 in mid-2020. In the meantime, both are already working with the surrounding communities. This summer, IBRI and BioCrossroads partnered with Near West and Near Northwest neighborhood high schools and the 16 Tech Community Corporation to host five summer interns through Project SEED/STEM at the IBRI office and labs.

The summer internship program is part of a common mission: to foster life sciences innovation and talent development and engage in STEAM education with the neighborhoods surrounding 16 Tech.

Tyler Williams: Community Member & Connector
Tyler Williams, a 2019 IUPUI graduate and Haughville resident, spent the summer with the 16 Tech Community Corporation working alongside our Director of Community Initiatives. Tyler shares highlights from his summer internship in this Q&A:

What did you enjoy most during your internship?

The best part of my internship was being involved in the community and working alongside great professionals who want to help make my community better for the next generation of entrepreneurs and creatives.
Tyler Williams joined Starla Hart, Director of Community Initiatives, to canvas neighborhoods near 16 Tech and share updates and information with residents.
What is the one key lesson you will take with you?

One key lesson I will take with me from my internship is that it's okay to make mistakes and not know everything. Sometimes as students and young professionals we want to be perfect, but sometimes messing up and not knowing allows us to grow and find our way.

What are your future plans?

My future plans after 16 Tech include working for Conexus Indiana as their Talent Coordinator.

What didn't you know about 16 Tech before you joined the team?

One thing I want people to know about 16 Tech is that the innovation district is going to make an impact on not only the surrounding neighborhoods but also everyone working in the district. The district is going to encourage collaboration amongst other creatives and is going to create opportunities for students who want to work in medicine, technology and manufacturing. Prior to joining 16 Tech, I did not know that an innovation district was being built literally down the street from my home. Now I know the impact the district is going to make and all the opportunities that are going to be created from the district. I am excited about the district's future.
