Alderman Reilly Reports

New 42nd Ward Boundaries - Effective May 15th

As a result of procedural redistricting after the 2020 Census, all Chicago Ward boundaries have been redrawn to reflect near-equal representation by population.

Based on 2020 Census Data, the 42nd Ward enjoyed dramatic growth in population, adding more than 30,000 more people. That population increase accounted for 58% of the City of Chicago’s entire population growth over the past decade. As a result, Alderman Reilly was required, by law, to reduce the population of the ward by nearly 30,000 people. Alderman Reilly would prefer to continue representing all of the neighborhoods currently in the 42nd Ward - but given the need to reduce population - that simply could not happen.

Click here to view an interactive map of the new ward boundaries across the City. On Monday, May 15, 2023, these new boundaries take effect. These changes may have an impact on you. Please click here to find your new Alderman & Ward (effective May 15th).

Anti-Drifting Infrastructure: Lower Lower Columbus and South Water

In response to drifting activity and the “Ring of Fire” incident at the intersection of Lower Lower Columbus Drive and South Water Street, Alderman Reilly asked Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) Traffic Engineers to conduct a traffic calming study at this location.  Specifically, the Alderman asked CDOT to determine if curb extensions, speed humps, and other infrastructure is needed to prevent dangerous drifting incidents.

As a result of the traffic study, CDOT recommended installation of two detached bump-outs, 8 bollards, and a speed hump in the middle of the intersection.

Alderman Reilly is pleased to announce he allocated a portion of his Aldermanic Menu to fund the installation of these improvements, and CDOT has completed installation of the anti drifting infrastructure.

Clark Street Extended Dining Survey Results

On April 12, 2023, Alderman Reilly launched a survey to gather public input about the closure of Clark Street between Grand Avenue and Kinzie Street to allow for extended outdoor dining. Thank you to the thousands of individuals who took the time to provide feedback. The results are in – 80% of respondents strongly support closing the street.

Given the overwhelming positive feedback, Alderman Reilly is currently working with the necessary City Departments to determine the duration and scope of the street closure, and the future of the Extended Outdoor Dining program on Clark Street. The program may last through the summer but will not be permanent. Stay tuned to Reilly Reports for information about next steps.

Area Trimming Program

The Bureau of Forestry (BOF) has instituted a new Area Trimming Program. Instead of trimming trees based on 311 requests, BOF has divided each ward into grids and plans to trim every tree within each grid. This will ensure proper maintenance of our trees.

Every Friday, BOF will have 2-3 tree trimming crews in the 42nd Ward (weather dependent). BOF will begin trimming trees in the Gold Coast and Northern Streeterville.

Please look out for temporary No Parking Tow Zone signs. These signs should be posted 48 hours in advance.

Please see the map below for the streets within BOF's first 42nd Ward grid.

Stage I - Inbound Kennedy

To help minimize the impact to traffic the reversible express lanes will remain open in the inbound direction, while two mainline inbound lanes will be closed at a time. Motorists should expect lane shifts and overnight lane closures and various ramp closures. Later this summer, painting and installation of new LED lighting will begin on inbound Hubbard's Cave, between Ohio and Lake streets. Construction is anticipated to be completed later this fall, with all lanes and ramps reopening and the express lanes resuming normal operations.
