Issue #32 | October 20, 2023

Weekend Closure

An overnight closure is expected Sunday, October 22, at 5 p.m. on northbound U.S. 69 from Blue Valley Parkway to 119th Street. This closure will allow crews to complete setting girders for a new flyover ramp bridge. The highway will reopen by 6 a.m. on Monday, October 23.

During the closure, northbound travelers will be detoured to the Blue Valley Parkway exit, followed by turning west onto 119th Street. Travelers can then merge onto U.S. 69 at the 119th street on-ramp.

See the map below for more detour information.

Construction Updates

Welcome to the work zone!

Work is progressing on the southern portion of U.S. 69 between 135th Street and 151st Street. Starting next week, October 29, U.S. 69 will undergo a series of traffic switches from Antioch Road to 143rd Street in which both directions of traffic will move onto the completed southbound pavement and bridges. Be prepared and vigilant as traffic configurations will change.

In November, noise wall construction will begin just north of 139th Street as crews will start installing wall support structures. As a reminder, not all noise walls will be constructed concurrently. For more information about noise wall construction please visit the project website.

Bridge construction continues along U.S. 69 in multiple areas. Construction crews are continuing with new bridges at Blue Valley Parkway, Indian Creek, College Blvd., North Branch Indian Creek, and I-435. At the 143rd Street bridge, barrier work is complete, and crews are starting to strip the wooden towers that had supported the bridge until the concrete set.

Latest Update: Trail Closure Information

With the arrival of the fall season, construction continues to advance throughout the corridor. As a result, portions of several walking/biking trails, including Tomahawk Creek, Indian Creek, and 143rd Street Trails are impacted where they cross U.S. 69. To see if any trails are impacted near you and to get the latest trail detour information, please visit the Overland Park Trail Closure Map.

Overview of Tomahawk Creek Trail Closure

Behind the Scenes

In the photo above, crews are completing a concrete deck pour at the Tomahawk Creek bridge. Crews pour, vibrate and smooth a concrete slab that will serve as roadway. Once laid, the concrete will be “cured” over time, as it takes approximately 14 days for it to reach full strength. The surface will be covered with burlap, and sprayed with water repeatedly during the following days to eliminate potential cracking while it cures.

Each batch of concrete is tested to verify quality.
