August Gaul was a skilled modeler of animals and figures, working in Germany from circa 1890 to 1920. His style was modern in form, creative in composition and sometimes whimsical. He found many of his subjects and inspiration at the Berlin Zoo.
He exhibited throughout his career, gained numerous civic and public commissions, and had the support of private patrons through their personal commissions.
