Actual stone weight is 4.12 carats.

The opal is an inch high not counting the bail at the top.

Greek circa 187-186 BC

Minted in Aspendus

Obverse design: Hercules

Reverse design: Zeus

The piece was minted more than 100 years after the death of Alexander the Great. Some collectors still refer to it as an Alexander coin which is accurate only if the word 'posthumous' is added.

It is the size of an American half dollar. We could mount it in a gold or silver bezel and, as luck would have it, both sides align well so the bezel would be reversible.

$750

A pair of 1792 Bronze French Medals

Made in England

Created at the Soho mint in Birmingham by the Manneron brothers in response to coin shortages during the French Revolution.

The first one represents a tight bundle of rods (presumably the French citizens). It is so strong that even Hercules can not break their strong resolve.

The second depicts soldiers taking oaths before stone tablets containing the Rights of Man.

Both are in mint state with a fair amount of luster remaining.

They are the size of U.S. silver dollars.

$550 for the pair.

1865 New Orleans Commercial Journal

A glimpse of our business world at the start of Reconstruction

This one of a kind record book from the Roberts & Owen Company of New Orleans is replete with receipts and assorted other documents issued between July, 1865 and January, 1866. Many of the receipts contain hand cancelled tax stamps.

This large company was in business before the Civil War ended in April, 1865 and continued for some time afterwards. That is certain by the number of transactions and their dollar amounts.

It contains about 100 pages of receipts, mostly three to a page with printing on both sides of each page.

Judging by the names on the receipts, the company did business with numerous prominent local businessmen. A safe bet is that we still have streets in uptown New Orleans bearing the names of some of those prosperous men.

On a quick perusal there is one specific transaction that jumps out. It is in the name of "A.B. Griswold Co." a large local retailer, best known for importing and selling firearms and swords during the Civil War. A patient search through the book will certainly find others.

The binding and cover are distressed as the photos show, and a small number of pages are torn.
