Wenzel Ulrik Tornøe

Wenzel Ulrik Tornøe (Danish, 1844-1907) A Very Fine and Large Oil on Canvas Titled "Systue" ("The Sewing Room"). The finely executed artwork depicting the interior scene of a 19th century sewing room, with eight dressmakers taking their lunch break; one maiden is opening a bottle of wine while another is holding a glass ready for the pour, the seated center one holding a cup of tea with a semi-wrapped sandwich, one leaning against the back wall, another resting with her elbow on a table and the other three standing maidens in the back viewing a catalogue/magazine page. Tornøe's capture of the expressions of exhaustion on the young seamstress’ faces, as well as the detailed background and the efficacy of painting the transparent glass on they young girl’s hand, are all truly exceptional, making this artwork probably one of Tornø’s best paintings. Signed and dated: Wenzel Tornøe, 1885. Circa: Denmark, 1885.

Set of Four French Louis XV Style Gilt-Wood Carved and Japanned Chinoiserie Lacquer Bergers Armchairs attributed Maison Jansen

A Fine and Rare Assembled Set of Four French Louis XV Style Gilt-Wood Carved and Japanned-Chinoiserie Lacquer Decorated Bergers Armchairs, attributed to Maison Jansen (House of Jansen). The rounded barrel-shaped frames with padded backseat, interior sides and armrests upholstered in a Rosé colored velvet with cushion. The armrests with scrolled giltwood carved ends, the lower apron centered with rosettes and raised on four cabriolet legs. All armchairs finely hand painted on the outside frames with scenes of every-day country life, fishing, hunting, harvesting, traveling, courting, riding on boats, lecturing, exercising, crossing bridges, with flying Ho-Ho birds, lakes, temples and pagodas. Three armchairs in red-lacquer and one in brown lacquer. Circa: Paris, 1890-1900.

French 19th Century Louis XV Style Ormolu Mounted Kingwood Secrétaire de Dame

A Very Fine French 19th Century Louis XV Style Ormolu-Mounted Kingwood, Satinwood and Fruitwood Parquetry Kidney-Shaped Secrétaire de Dame (Lady's Desk) with an enamel dial clock and Candelabra, Attributed to Théodore Millet "Maison Millet". The Rococo style 'Bonheur Du Jour' secretary with rounded back and sides with a sun-burst parquetry design, with two upper drawers below a circular clock with Roman numerals, flanked on each side by a pair of twin-light candelabra and faux-drawer door compartments, with a leather top that slides outwards, the apron fitted with three drawers; raised on four cabriolet legs applied with corner foliage ormolu sprays terminating in scroll sabots. Circa: Paris, 1880-1890.

 

This beautifully designed Rococo style lady's secretary cabinet, probably by the Parisian ébéniste Théodore Millet "Maison Millet" is typical of the firm’s high quality and inventive production in the late 19th century. Founded in 1853 by his father, the Maison Millet won many awards at international exhibitions such as the Médaille d'or at the Paris 1889 Exposition Universelle, a Grand prix in 1900 and three Diplômes d'Honneur. Whilst his work is synonymous with the firms of Zwiener and Linke, sculptor Léon Messagé’s (1842-1901)

French Louis XV Style 19th Century Gilt-Bronze Cherub and Maiden Mantel Clock

An Important and Palatial French Louis XV Style 19th Century Gilt-Bronze Cherub and Maiden Mantel Clock "In Search of Love", the movement by "Samuel Marti et Cie." The large and impressive two-tone satin and mercury gilt figural clock with finely chased gilt-bronze (Ormolu) figures of a cupid (cherub) holding a floral wreath and peeking from behind the clock case onto a young scantily-clad maiden or bather, the top crowned with a plying Putto and all surmounted with scrolls, flowers and acanthus decorations. The circular white enameled dial with Roman and Arabic numerals. The bell striking movement stamped: "Marti et Cie. Medaille D' Argent 1889 - 108-10-4" and "L.R. BREVETÉ S.G.D.G.". Circa: Paris, 1889-1890.

Italian 17th Century Oval Oil on Canvas Head of Christ Crowned with Thorns Circle of Pierre Mignard

A Very Fine Italian 17th Century Oval Oil on Canvas "Head of Christ Crowned with Thorns" Circle of Pierre Mignard (French, 1612-1695) within its original gilt wood and gesso carved frame. A crown of thorns was placed on Christ’s head in the lead up to his crucifixion, while Roman soldiers mockingly declared him ‘King of the Jews’ (Matthew 27: 29). This detailed portrayal of Christ’s face convincingly conveys his anguish in the aftermath of this torment. Circa: 1670-1690.

A Very Fine Pair of French 19th/20th Century Louis XV/XVI Style Transitional Style Satinwood Parquetry and Gilt-Bronze Mounted Commodes with Brêche d'Alep marble-tops, attributed to François Linke (1855-1946), inspired by models by Léonard Boudin (French, 1735-1804), Gilles Joubert (French, 1689–1775) and Jean-Henri Riesener (German, 1734-1806). The rectangular shaped bodies and mild serpentine fronts, each with a large drawer surmounted with ormolu wreath-ring pulls, the banded ormolu aprons with interlocking rings centered with acorn finials and keyhole escutcheons, the corners surmounted with ormolu acanthus shield mounts centered with swaged wreaths, raised on four cabriolet legs ending with with lion-paw-cast sabots. French 19th Century Patinated Bronze Group The Marble Sculptor in a dark brown-green patina After Edouard Drouot

A Very Fine French 19th Century Patinated Bronze Group "The Marble Sculptor" in a dark brown-green patina, After Edouard Drouot (French, 1859-1945). The large and finely cast bronze sculpture depicting a young marble sculptor crank lifting and loading a large Carrara marble block to be carved at his workshop, onto his horse-drawn cart, raised on a veined verde-green marble base. Signed: E. Drouot. circa: 1890-1900.

 

Edouard Drouot (French, 1859-1945). Drouot was not only a prolific sculptor, but a painter as well. He studied in Paris under Mathurin Moreau (1822-1912) and Emile Thomas (1817-1882). He exhibited at the Salon in 1889 and received honourable mention at the 1900 Universal Exposition in Paris. His bronze sculptures were exported to collectors and art dealers alike all over the world.

The base bears a pseudo "Caen French Porcelain" marking, Circa: 1870.

A Palatial Very Fine and Rare Pair of French 19th Century Louis XV Style Ormolu and Malachite Pedestal Side Tables, attributed to Frédéric-Eugène Piat (French, 1827-1903), the bronze casting by Georges Édouard Gagneau (1842-1909) Gagneau Frères. The ornate triform gilt-bronze base with a floral, acanthus, wreath and seashell design, raised on scrolled feet, the interior center surmounted with twin acorn finials, and fitted with a later circular malachite veneer top above an icicle designed gilt-bronze apron. Stamped "G.A" several times on the ormolu underside. Circa: Paris, 1870.

The joyful indoor family scene depicting a Christmas and new year's celebration with an elder seated couple, the grandparents, the grandmother holding a toddler on her arms, the grandfather with his smoking pipe by his side, both enjoying a young boy's (grandson) poem recital, while other children await their turn with gifts as the mesmerized young parents Stand and watch in awe. A Christmas tree by the window, a cat sneaking by and a basket with wine and bread awaits being delivered as a gift to the elders. A young boy sits patiently on a chair, an apple and an umbrella by his side. Signed: Fried Ortlieb, München 1873 - (lower right). A Fine Pair of French 19th Century Japonisme Louis XV Style Gilt-Bronze and Marble Figural Chenets (Andirons) by BOUHON FRES, each depicting a flaming dragon atop an "L" shaped base surmounted with an allegorical gilt-bronze and marble urns with floral garlands and paw-feet, the base with a draped ormolu design and raised on tapered feet. Stamped: "B&H". Circa: Paris, 1890-1900.


The bronziers Bouhon et Cie. Bouhon Frers. specialized in bronze-decorated fire-places and fire-fittings. These large and fine chenets are supreme examples of their output. The firm participated in the 1878 and 1900 Paris Expositions Universelles.

A Very Fine, Large and Rare Italian 19th Century Gilt-Bronze Mounted Ebony, Copper, Gilt-Bronze and Bone-Inlaid Ebonized Display Cabinet, the cresting of inverted break-front outline surmounted by gilt-bronze figures of standing griffins, veneered with a frieze of anthemion above a large beveled glazed door enclosing two shelves, the flared convex sides fitted with triple columnar supports, the conforming lower section with molded borders fitted with stylized female sphinxes and centered by a narrow drawer; the porating griffins, anthemion, birds, rinceaux and female figures on ebonized grounds, and decorated with a pair of bronze masks.
