Fullerton's STAGEStheatre Leaving Venue Due to COVID-19
A shockwave was felt in Orange County this week with the announcement by the nearly thirty year old STAGEStheatre in Fullerton that it has been forced to leave its venue due to the financial impact of the COVID-19 crisis. This is the second theatre company to announce its closing--Attic Theatre in Santa Ana closed earlier this summer. STAGEStheatre's leadership insist that they will be back, though, in a statement posted on their Facebook page: "Leaving the theatre space allows us to streamline our entire organization so that once it is safe to return to live performances we will be situated in the most ideal position possible. It will allow us to consolidate our resources and reduce our payables for the foreseeable future. This in no way means that STAGEStheatre as an organization is closing. STAGEStheatre is more than a building. Indeed, although we have been at our home in Fullerton for the longest stretch of time, it is not our first venue. Our intention is to take this time to reorganize, fundraise, and plan our return when it is deemed safe to do so. We make this decision so that we may live to play another day."

ORANGE COUNTY MUSEUMS RE-OPENING -- AGAIN
With the State announcing that Orange County has been moved from Purple to Red status for COVID-19 intensity, the list of businesses and venues permitted to re-open has widened to include museums. All must observe strict safety protocols, but OC's museums have been ready and waiting since they first were permitted to re-open earlier this summer--and then were shuttered again when the State abruptly re-imposed closures. This weekend, Bowers Museum and Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens reopen to visitors. Mission San Juan Capistrano, which is not only a heritage site but displays an important collection of art, has been open most of the summer for visits to its expansive grounds and gardens. Last week's Voice of OC story by Richard Chang surveyed the status of OC's art museums.

OC Assemblymember Appointed Chair of the Arts Committee
Assemblymember Sharon Quirk-Silva of Fullerton has been appointed Chair of the California State Assembly's Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism and Internet Media Committee.
Primary jurisdictions of this committee are programs and policies affecting the recording, motion picture and other entertainment industries, tourism and arts programs and museums, professional and amateur sports including the State Athletic Commission and the regulation of athlete agents, and internet media. The committee plays a vital role in legislation impacting arts and culture, including funding for the California Arts Council, our state arts agency, which awards more than $26 million in grants to artists and arts organizations statewide. "We are so proud that Assemblymember Quirk-Silva will lead the work of this committee, as it directly impacts many arts organizations here in Orange County," commented ArtsOC President & CEO Rick Stein.
