School Board Selects Dr. Mark Rendell as Next BPS Superintendent | |
During a specially called meeting, the school board voted to select Dr. Mark Rendell as the next superintendent for Brevard Public Schools.
Dr. Rendell has been the principal of Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School since 2019.
Before coming to Cocoa Beach, Dr. Rendell was the superintendent of Indian River County Schools. In Brevard County, he has also been a principal at Titusville High and an assistant principal at Melbourne High, Eau Gallie High, and Cocoa High.
"I look forward to working with all the members of the school board and the district staff to support the work in the classroom. This will be a team effort, and I believe that if we all work together, we can achieve excellence," Dr. Rendell said shortly after being selected.
Dr. Rendell was one of three finalists the board discussed during the meeting. The vote by the board was 3-2 and Dr. Rendell will begin his new role on June 1.
School Board Chairman Matt Susin, working with legal counsel, and Dr. Rendell came to an employment agreement that runs for three years. The agreement will go before the full school board for approval at its next meeting on Tuesday, May 9, at 5:30 p.m.
Dr. Rendell will be ceremonially sworn in as superintendent during the May 30 board meeting.

2023 Brevard Middle School Track & Field Championship | |
Cocoa High School hosted the 2023 Brevard Middle School Track & Field Championship.

- DeLaura 8th Grade Girls 1st Place
- Kennedy 7th Grade Girls 1st Place
- Kennedy 8th Grade Boys 1st Place

The Satellite High boys tennis team came in 2nd place in the FHSAA Class 2A Championship for the third consecutive year. In the semifinals, Satellite advanced past The Bolles School, 4-1. The team was powered by the efforts of the doubles team of Roman Vigliotti and Marcus Hatzakis, who dropped their first set but stormed back for the win, 8-4. Caleb Domkowski and Jack Lindstrom did their part by winning the doubles and both singles matches. Ultimately, Satellite was defeated by American Heritage (Plantation) in the final, 5-0. Satellite was the last remaining public school team in the state tournament. |  | |
The Satellite High girls tennis team won districts without dropping a set and won the regional semifinals, 4-2. As the top winner of districts, Ellie Carpenter went on to play at states in singles and doubles with Maya Boysen. Ellie, in 2A singles, made one of the deepest runs in the girls singles bracket. Ellie won her quarterfinal singles match, 6-4, 7-5, losing in the semifinal, 6-1, 6-3. In doubles, Ellie and Maya won their quarterfinal (6-0, 6-2) and semifinal (6-1, 6-4) matches, where they played Pine Crest School in the finals. Ultimately, they would lose the matchup, 6-1, 6-2.

Thien-Nhi Nguyen of West Shore Jr./Sr. High | |
Congratulations to Thien-Nhi Nguyen of West Shore Jr./Sr. High for attending the 2023 Sunshine State Scholars Conference and receiving a one-year scholarship to attend one of Florida’s higher education institutions.
Thien-Nhi is highly involved in various STEM activities, including Math Counts, HOSA, and Cyber Patriots. Her research in microbiology has landed her the Collins Aerospace Award and Scientific Achievement Award at the Brevard County Regional Science Fair. Thien-Nhi recognizes the importance of giving back to her community which is evidenced through her nearly 500 hours of tutoring.
The 26th annual Sunshine State Scholars Conference honored the state’s top performing 11th grade students in STEM. More than 100 student-scholars attended the prestigious two-day event, which was hosted by the Florida Department of Education and the Florida Education Foundation. Aside from Thien-Nhi, 27 other students from across the state received scholarships.
