What Happened this Week?

The recipient of this week's top donation and top transfer is a recently filed Ballot Initiative Committee named Citizens to Protect Transportation Funding. This committee received a  $200,000 donation and $100,000 transfer on Monday, July 11th. The donation came from the Illinois Road and Transportation Builders Association, and the transfer came from the  Illinois Road Builders PAC.

Citizens to Protect Transportation Funding filed a statement of organization with the Illinois State Board of Elections three weeks ago and already has over $350,000 in available funds.

The committee supports a constitutional amendment requiring that all transportation related revenue be designated for transportation funding. This would prevent the State of Illinois from "sweeping" transportation related funds in the event of a budget shortfall. Click here for a Reboot Illinois article explaining the amendment.

This amendment was passed by the General Assembly on May 5th, and will now appear as a statewide ballot measure in the November General Election.  This initiative had bipartisan support in the General Assembly, and its supporting PAC has funding from primarily business and labor organizations. Ballot initiative committees have no monetary limits on contributions or spending, but are prohibited from transferring funds to any other type of political committee.
