Reflection from Fr. Joseph | | |
Happy Father’s Day! I am grateful for my own father’s love and guidance.
But fatherhood is not for the faint of heart. To raise children and to love a wife sacrificially calls upon a man’s every resource and strength. Many men, especially in today’s world, may not have had a good father, and thus are trying to “wing it” by the seat of their pants. Often, there are myriad of temptations against a father’s noble desires for their children.
So today, I want to offer you dads some resources to help in your own formation as men and as fathers – and fathers-to-be.
Books
The three best books I’ve encountered about manhood are “Wild at Heart” by John Eldridge – this bestselling book was very instrumental in my own formation, as he examines the desires of a man’s heart and helps him to pattern his life on the Heavenly Father. His sequel “Fathered by God” continues that theme, pointing out that God the Father can form us along the masculine journey.
From Catholic authors, I recommend “Forming Families, Forming Saints” by Fr. Carter Griffin, a contemporary priest from the Washington Archdiocese, and “Be A Man” by Fr. Larry Richards, which focuses on the virtues that a man must develop to become as God created him to be.
Blogs/Podcasts
A great one is the “Catholic Gentleman” (https://catholicgentleman.com/) which has articles and a podcast about topics related to our Catholic Faith. Another good one is “Those Catholic Men” (https://thosecatholicmen.com/).
Video Series/Movies
The Knights of Columbus put out a great video series called “Fathers for Good” (https://videos.kofc.org/en/category/videos/fathers-for-good) which was produced by a great Catholic man out of Danbury! EWTN also has an interesting series I recently came across called “Leaving Boyhood Behind” (https://ondemand.ewtn.com/Home/Series/catalog/video/en/rites-of-passage--leaving-boyhood-behind) which outlines what it takes to raise a boy into a man.
A movie that I might recommend is “Courageous” about a series of men trying to navigate fatherhood in the modern world. Although it was put out by a Protestant group, it was pretty darn good and entertaining. Check it out here: https://kendrickbrothers.com/courageous/ .
In sum, it’s not easy to be a father – or a Catholic man – in today’s world. But we’re not alone, and the Church has many resources for men to continue to form themselves in Christ so they can be the best husbands and fathers they are called to be!

End-of-the-Year Youth Appeal
Dear families,
It has been an amazing year in Youth Encounters! From our first-ever overnight retreats to our dynamic Youth Encounter nights to our St Jude Youth TikTok channel going viral (one video with over 5 million views!), we're excited at what God is doing in our youth here in Monroe.
We have always made Youth Encounters free, no-cost, and no-sign-up. The Gospel should never come at a cost! At the same time, it does cost money to run Youth Encounters: supplies and food are getting more expensive (and the kids are getting hungrier!), and many of our trips and activities are heavily subsidized. We offer significant Camp Veritas scholarships, too, which drain our resources.
We are asking families to contribute to an End-of-the-Year Youth Encounter Appeal in the hopes of raising $1,000 for our youth programs here at St. Jude's. This will allow us to continue our strong youth program without taking money away from the other vital ministries at our parish.
Would you consider donating? If so, you can find the link here: https://www.osvhub.com/st-jude-church-monroe/giving/funds/youth-encounter-kid-s-club-appeal or the QR code to donate is here below:
