Reflection from Fr. Joseph | |
This coming week begins one of our beautiful annual traditions at St. Jude – our Novena, which is nine days of Masses and devotions leading up to our patron saint’s feast day on October 28. We are excited to welcome back many of the priests who have served here to preach this Novena! We have Masses and prayers at 7pm every day from Oct. 20-25, and then again on Oct. 28 for our Feast. Here is the schedule of preachers:
Monday, October 21 – Fr. Skip
Tuesday, October 22 – TBD
Wednesday, October 23 – Msgr. Bob Weiss
Thursday, October 24 – Fr. Jim DiVasto
Friday, October 25 – Fr. Joseph Ukaj
Saturday and Sunday, October 26-27 – The Deacons will preach at the weekend Masses
Monday, October 28 – Fr. Joseph Gill
Please note that there will be no morning Masses those weekdays. The evening Mass and St. Jude devotions will be live-streamed from our website.
We encourage all parishioners to participate in this beautiful devotion!
In other parish news, we’d like to congratulate Sandy Gaughan for being awarded the St. Augustine Medal. This award is given by the Bishop to one person or couple from every parish in the diocese to recognize faithful, sacrificial volunteers who give their time, talents, and energy to the parish. Sandy has been a member of our parish for many years and is a Religious Education teacher, an active member of Buildings and Grounds, helps tirelessly with the youth group, is one of our Eucharistic Adoration guardians, and works at the Italian Festival. We are so grateful for all that she does for St. Jude’s Parish!

October & The Salve Regina
During October, the Month of the Holy Rosary, Holy Mother Church remembers the Blessed Mother of Jesus, Mary Immaculate Queen of the Universe. We will pray to Mary for her intercession through song by singing the "Salve Regina" prior to the recessional hymn at the Sunday Masses. One of the 4 Marion Antiphons, the "Salve Regina" (translated to "Hail Queen") is traditionally said or sung after night prayer, from the end of Eastertide until the beginning of Advent. It is also the final prayer of the Rosary. Musicologists trace the song's origins back to the 11th or 12th Century, but has, over the last 800+ years, been adapted for many rituals of the Church. It holds a very special place for monks and nuns as a processional hymn while they walk to their sleeping quarters at the conclusion of their evening prayers. The chant we sing today is based upon a 17th Century melody. It is sung at the ending of a priest's funeral as well. We pray for Mary's intercession to guide us during this month dedicated to her Holy Rosary. Please raise your voices in prayer together over the next 4 weeks.
The song is found at #697 in the Breaking Bread hymnal. Out of an abundance of reverence, please remain in the pews until the song is completed and one verse of the closing hymn sung. Here is a link to listen to this beautiful sung prayer to Mary.
