Reflection from Fr. Joseph | |
I always say that we don’t pick our patron saints, our patron saints pick us. So often I will run into a saint over and over again – maybe I’ll find a saint’s picture on the ground, then their face will appear on my Facebook feed, and then I’ll encounter one of their quotes in a book I’m reading. It’s sign that the saint is trying to get my attention!
We seem to have developed a beautiful connection with St. Padre Pio at St. Jude’s! We had his relics here this past April, and now we have another powerful encounter with him through Cindy Russo, a woman who has an incredibly testimony of meeting St. Padre Pio – forty years after he died! She has become a close devotee of the saint, and is bringing his chalice to the parish where we will celebrate Mass with it on Saturday night.
It seems that he has adopted our parish as his own – and what a blessing that would be! He is certainly one of the most-beloved saints of the 20th Century, and perhaps ever (the joke in Italy is that the Trinity isn’t the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, but Jesus, Mary, and Padre Pio – based on the statues that don every home’s mantle!). A Franciscan priest in a small town, he gained notoriety for the many mystical gifts he enjoyed, such as the gift of reading souls, bilocation (being in two places at once), and the stigmata (possessing the wounds of Christ).
But we must not forget that the exterior phenomena were not the point – the point is that he tried to live his life in such a union with Christ that God could use him powerfully as his instrument. We may not have the same mystical gifts as this holy friar, but we can – and should – imitate his total surrender to Jesus Christ, seeking to imitate Him in every thought, word, and deed.
Come and hear about how St. Padre Pio has changed Cindy’s life, and the lives of so many others, at all of the events coming up this weekend:
Friday, 7-9pm – Youth Encounter where Cindy will present to our teens
Saturday, 4:30pm – Mass celebrated with Padre Pio’s chalice
After Mass, a light dinner will follow
Saturday, 7pm – Adoration
Saturday, 7:30pm – Talk by Cindy Russo (in the Church)
Sunday, 10:30am – Religious Education – Cindy will be speaking to our kids and their families
Please join us when you are able this weekend where we welcome a wonderful woman of faith and humility – and when we welcome the saint who has adopted our parish, St. Padre Pio!
