New Beginnings 7/28/2023

Reflection from Fr. Joseph

Ever since Covid, many parishes (including our own) have live-streamed their Masses. In many ways it is a tremendous blessing, as it allows homebound or sick people to worship with us, and for those who are traveling to feel connected to their parish.

However, as a public service announcement, it is important to remind everyone that live-streaming Sunday Mass does not fulfill our Sunday obligation. It can be used in addition to attending Mass in-person, but it is not meant to be a substitute for attending in-person. One still needs to physically attend Mass while on vacation, traveling for sports tournaments, etc. As we’ve seen from our Covid experience, Zooming anything is a paltry substitute for the actual reality of being there. We simply can’t enter into the worship and sacrifice of the Mass from our lounge chair or our living room. It’s like the difference between watching a movie about Jesus’ death and Resurrection, and actually being present in Jerusalem to see His death and Resurrection live and in-person. Since the Mass makes present, in an unbloody way, the Sacrifice of Christ’s death, then we need to be there in-person. Watching Mass on Sunday via livestream and not physically attending, unless you’re sick or otherwise incapacitated, violates the Third Commandment and is a mortal sin.

Thankfully, the internet has made it easier than ever before to find a local Mass! Just check out www.masstimes.org to find a Mass wherever you’re traveling – both in-country and abroad. It’s a great joy to experience Mass in Florida, Paris, or Lake George. So check out your local churches on vacation and while traveling, and you’ll find that it enriches your spiritual life!

We have had an amazing first six months of our 50th Anniversary Year!

Activities and Events included

  • New Year's Day Open House in the Rectory.
  • February our FANTASTIC 1st Annual Chili Cookoff Contest was attended by over 100 parishioners.
  • Our Lent was enriched with an authentic Passover Seder meal.
  • Thanks to our Seniors Group, over 50 Easter bags were donated to Blessed Sacrament children.
  • In April we surprised the 17 Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth with Easter Baskets.
  • We celebrated Fr. Joseph's 10th Priesthood Anniversary in May. We also joyfully participated in the Monroe Memorial Day Parade and festivities.
  • June found us at our combined Parish Picnic with St. Stephen's held this year on the spacious grounds of St. Rose Parish. Fun, food and friends made for a great Community event.
  • Fittingly, our first six months ended on June 11th, the Feast of Corpus Christi, with a Mass and Eucharistic Procession.

Many more exciting Events and Celebrations to come!

One In Christ – The 2023 Bishop’s Appeal

Your gifts at work

Future priests of the Diocese of Bridgeport receive comprehensive formation in theology, pastoral ministry, personal growth, and, most importantly, the spiritual life at seminaries chosen by the Bishop to best suit the needs of the seminarian and of the diocese. Preparation for the Priesthood takes anywhere from six to eight years, depending on the age and educational background of the man when he enters. All of our seminarians receive graduate degrees in theology prior to their ordination.  Through your generous gift to the Bishop's Appeal, the Diocese will be better able to support men who are discerning priesthood and may respond generously and courageously to that call.

Thank you for your gift.

To make a gift, or for more information, please visit us at 2023BishopsAppeal.org, call (203) 416-1470 or scan with your phone.

Youth Group Car Wash a Huge Success!

Our first Youth Car Wash was a huge success! Thanks to the generosity of many of our parishioners, we were able to raise over $700 to donate to the Missionaries of Charity in Bridgeport, who do incredible work with the poorest of the poor in our own backyard. Many thanks to Karin Tierney and Sandy Gaughan who organized it, and Mark Babyak and Peter Blair for helping direct our teens and keep everything running smoothly. Well done!

Eagle Scout Project Thank You!

Thank you to everyone that donated, this project wouldn’t have been possible without all of your generosity. The landscaping started on the 19th and was finished on the 20th, the grass plugs occupy the top half of the hill and will grow to cover the whole area. Juniper shrubs cover the bottom of the hill and will spread out across the whole area as well. Thank you again to everyone who donated, the whole project was a huge success and went a lot better than expected thanks to everyone who helped.

Thank You,

Christopher Maslar.
