Reflection from Fr. Joseph | |
It is often said that the difference between the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea is that one has water flowing both into and out of it, while the other has water only flowing in. The Sea of Galilee is teeming with life, because water flows in and out, while the Dead Sea has such a high salt concentration because there is nowhere for the water to go, except evaporation – hence, nothing can survive.
This is often used as an analogy of the Christian life, and fittingly so. A Christian is called to allow God to pour in – prayer, worship, Christian education. But a Christian is also called to allow God to pour out – in evangelization, ministry, and service. A truly living Christian has God moving in both directions – pouring into them, and pouring out of them.
This weekend is our annual Ministry Fair, where we will be exhibiting the 40+ ministries that make up the parish of St. Jude’s. From music ministry to religious education, from Friendly Visitors to the homebound to our Food Pantry, from Bible Studies and youth group to Senior Group and Healing Shawl, we have a wide plethora of ways in which we can connect with God and our fellow Catholics, serve the poor, and build the Kingdom.
I urge and encourage every parishioner to visit the Parish Hall after Mass to see what ministries we have, and what ministries might be of interest to join. To sweeten the deal, we’ve got some coffee and donuts available too!
But today I want to highlight the need for “pouring out” ministry. We held a discussion at the last Parish Council meeting about the difficulty of getting parishioners to volunteer for many of the important ministries. I must admit that I agree. One of the things that have surprised me the most about being a Pastor is the large number of people who, when I ask them to help with some ministry or other, tell me “no” – it’s about 50% of the time that I get a negative answer (and of those under 50 years old, it’s about 70% of the time). It’s quite a challenge to lead a movement to advance the Kingdom of God when no one else wants to move with you!
Of course, we shouldn’t volunteer out of obligation or guilt. But we should really consider – what are the gifts and talents that God has given me to be given away in service to His people? It could be just the witness of your family – you could become a marriage or baptism mentor couple. Maybe you just feel like all you can offer is a strong back for manual labor – then help us out with Buildings and Grounds Committee! Maybe you’re passionate about your Catholic Faith – consider sharing it with our young people by teaching religious education. Maybe you have a gift or talent that does not yet have a ministry – consider how God is calling you to use it!
I know that most people don’t volunteer, not because of lack of desire, but because of a lack of time – family obligations, on top of a busy work schedule, often make every minute spoken for. If this is the case, I recommend serving together as a family! What a powerful thing to teach our kids – that true Christians live a life of service. We get the double benefit of spending time with our family, and also giving back at the same time. It’s usually not a lack of time, but a lack of priority. In times past, the church used to be more central in every family’s life – let’s bring that back!
A parishioner recently asked if we would take a survey of parishioners to see if we were meeting their needs. I understood the sentiment, but was uncomfortable with the terminology – we’re not a business, with parishioners as consumers. We are a movement, a mission – and every single one of us plays a part. This is literally the most important mission on the face of the earth – to bring the saving grace of Jesus Christ and the opportunity of everlasting life to a world that is heading the opposite direction. That’s why we exist as a parish and as a church – and YOU have a role to play. Are you playing that role? Are you letting God pour in, and are you letting God pour out of you?
