for Adjunctive Cancer Care

Newsletters are promotional tools. We have received consistent good feedback on our newsletter as being highly informative and less blatantly promotional than most others. Within the flow of the advertisements for our products and services you will find inspiration, humor, recipes and more.

In January, Dr. Connie and Dr. Marcel went on a two-week pilgrimage with 40 friends to the Holy Land and we skipped publishing a beginning-of-year newsletter.   The content of this newsletter, although thematically attuned to the beginning of a new year, applies to any moment of human life when confronted with the cycles of change and rebirth.

Regardless of your spiritual or philosophical orientation, our hopes and dreams are all the same.  We seek peace, happiness, inner fulfillment and liberation from suffering. The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to attune to the yearnings of our hearts and souls and dive ever more deeply into the specific manifestation of the truth that we each resonate with most strongly.

This month, Dr. Connie begins by musing on meaning and rituals; Dr. Marcel offers his thoughts on adapting to constant change; Dr. Connie offers advice on affirmations; Jane H. discusses techniques to keep your resolutions and Anandini writes about the significance of the Year of the Rat and beginnings.

The  Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care  articles include a study on the relationship between weight loss and a lower incidence of breast cancer; results from a study linking high fructose corn syrup and intestinal tumors and an article on the discovery of how a tropical flower can  help address pancreatic cancer.

Finally, just below, is information on a high school that truly prepares its students for a life of integrity, happiness and success.  Living Wisdom High School seems like an idealistic dream.  It is not.  It is a real-life educational process whose  graduates are exceptionally prepared to handle the adaptation to a rapidly changing world.  How we we know this?  Our own son, now 31 years old, is a product of the the Living Wisdom educational system.

If you have a child or know of someone with a child of high school age, you must add the open house described below to your list of considerations.  You will be absolutely happy you did so.

May all beings be healthy and happy!

Dr. Connie, Dr. Marcel, Dr. Sage, Jane H. and your health care team  at Pacific Naturopathic and the Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care

Making the New Year Celebrations Meaningful

by Connie Hernandez, ND
Mochi pounding in Japan

L iving in Japan for a number of years, Dr. Marcel and I especially enjoyed the rituals that comprised the New Year celebrations.  We would wander over to the 13th century Buddhist temple, literally in our back yard, to take our turns in  the ringing of the enormous bell that was rung 108 times at midnight. We participated in the ritualistic sipping of gold fleck infused sake poured from a tiny ceremonial pot into equally tiny sipping cups. There was the pounding of the mochi, the wandering around the neighborhood enjoying the special foods prepared for the visiting and reconnecting of the opening days of the new year, the first writing of the new year, and more.

Rituals like these bring meaning to otherwise ordinary days, help us connect with each other, remember the year that is passing, and set a tone for the year that is becoming. No better time than the New Year to create meaningful rituals for you and your family.

True Stability in the River of Changes

by Marcel Hernandez, ND

_____________________________

You never step twice into the same river.
                                 --Heraclitus
___________________________________

Most mornings I draw a little card from a crystal bowl that has a word printed on it like  vulnerability, passion, harmony, friendship or joy . There are about a hundred or so of these little cards.  I think about the card I draw and try to make the concept on the card be the focus for the day. Yesterday morning as I drew a card a second card jumped out of the bowl with it.  The two cards were "stability" and "change," seemingly contradictory concepts.  I thought about stability and change in relation to health on and off for the rest of the day.

Change is what we all have trouble with.  Although we know that change is occurring every millisecond of our lives, we have an unconscious resistance to change, especially as we age.  We yearn for what we think is stability - a place where we can just be calm can take a respite from the unpredictability of events occurring within us and within our environments.  Simply put, this type of stability does not exist.

Moving Forward in the New Year -
How to Use Affirmations

Connie Hernandez, ND

Winter. Spring. Summer. Fall. The natural world flows naturally, effortlessly, inevitably through the seasons.  Seeds sprout. Flowers bloom. Petals drop. Plants wither and die. Our bodies follow a similar cycle from birth and infancy through childhood and adolescence and young adulthood to aging and death.

Our mental and emotional worlds and habit patterns evolve as well, but not so naturally, effortlessly, or inevitably. We are who we are and we do what we do as a result of the circumstances attendant to the lives we have led and the decisions we have made.

New:
The Centurion for Joint Pain Relief
(A "Tesla Recharging Station for Humans")

Jane Hernandez, our resident EFT and hypnotherapy practitioner, got immediate relief from knee pain

PEMF (Pulsed Electromagnetic Frequency) technology was approved by the FDA in 1979 and has been used for the past 50 years to treat various conditions such as non-union bone fractures, rotator cuff tendinitis and peripheral nerve regeneration.

Documented studies indicate that PEMF Devices can be effective for treating osteoarthritis. PEMF treatment can reduce pain and swelling and have overall beneficial effects on the cardiovascular and autonomic nervous system.

Drs. Marcel and Connie thought to try a PEMF device for these purposes, and came home from last month's conference with the Centurion, a ring shaped PEMF device. Dr. Marcel and Jane (Dr. Marcel's sister and our EFT practitioner) tried it on their knees. Dr. Connie tried it on a threatening frozen shoulder. The research documented efficacy over a month's period of time, but all three of us felt an increase in relaxation and got some immediate relief from joint pain with the first 30 minute treatment. We are all eager to see the effects of the suggested two treatments daily.

Try a treatment in the office yourself. (Contraindicated for those with pacemakers,  electronic stimulators, any magnetic or metal implants, and stents. Inadvisable in the first month of pregnancy.)  $30 for 30 minutes.

To reserve a treatment time please phone 650-961-1660

Yes, You CAN Stick to Your New Year's Resolutions... Here's How

Jane Hernandez, CCHT

In the last few weeks I've been getting many emails offering to upgrade my life with the latest diet, the one that really works; or maybe that detox that will rid me of all the toxins that make me look fat. And, to back it up, gyms are offering special deals. No doubt you've been getting these too.

The new year brings with it hope that things can change... finally.  Whether it's our health, our spiritual self, our outlook on life...it's as if we get a new chance to freshen our lives with our can-do hopes. But, oh, the disappointment when we can't follow through...AND, there's always a good reason that prevents us from doing so.

FIT (Food Inflammation Test) TEST:
Kits Now Available From Our office

At a recent medical conference we attended we stopped by one of the booths to discuss advances in allergy testing.  We were so highly impressed with the technology behind this test that Dr. Marcel decided to pay for and do one of the tests on himself.

Food sensitivities affect more than 100 million people worldwide. Food sensitivities cause a range of illness and symptoms, including skin rashes and chronic intestinal diseases.

The FIT Test is a patented, multi-pathway delayed food sensitivity test. The test uses new technology that measures both IgG and Immune Complexes, the most common food-related pathways in the body. The FIT Test measures sensitivities to up to 132 different foods and additives spanning all major food groups. Food elimination based on the FIT Test results reduces symptoms a patient is experiencing.

The FIT Test yields many benefits, including: uncovering which foods are causing inflammation and disease, developing a personalized nutritional guide, and improving a patient's state of health and energy levels. The test is the most sensitive food test available using new patented technology.

A clinical study showed the FIT test helped people with:

* Anxiety and depression
* Bloating and stomach pain
* Inability to lose weight
* Impotence/libido
* Fatigue/insomnia
* Joint pain
* Constipation/diarrhea
* Sugar craving

The FIT test is available from our office for $325.  We only ordered five kits for this initial offering. Reserve yours now by phoning us at 650-961-1660.
Included in the price is a color-coded report showing foods with highest sensitivities, a personalized 7-day rotation diet and an app to help you choose appropriate foods.

Note:  You must be a patient at Pacific Naturopathic to participate in this promotion.

Cheers to New Beginnings!

Anandini Wadera, L.Ac.

In the spirit of new beginnings, I'd like to welcome 2020 as well as the Chinese Lunar New Year of the Metal Rat!

The year of the Rat in Chinese Astrology is first of the 12 animal cycle, and therefore holds even more symbolism for new beginnings and renewals. It's a fresh start and a chance for all animal zodiac signs to embark on new adventures and successfully complete them. The Metal aspect of the Rat this year strongly drives ambition and motivation, generating momentum for achievement.

One of my longtime dreams has been to spend a month in Africa. Anywhere in Africa. I went to Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi in 2013, and I've been trying to go back to the continent ever since I left. Although I am not climbing Kilimanjaro this time, I am spending 3 weeks in Tanzania, a large chunk exploring Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, and Lake Manyara and a short stint in Zanzibar. I hope to connect with the acupuncture projects on the ground, either for an opportunity this time or the next. And yes, there will be a next! I can't think of a better way to start 2020, the year of the Rat.

With all of this in mind, I encourage everyone to work toward a goal you may have abandoned many times or an exciting new one, carefully plan it out, and see if this year brings it to fruition. There's Big Magic (in the words of Elizabeth Gilbert) to be had, if you welcome it.

NEW:
Fast Acting Muscle and Joint Relief Gel
Really Works as Advertised!

Also discovered at a booth at a recent medical conference...

Both Dr. Connie and Dr. Marcel have minor musculoskeletal challenges.  In his spiel to us, the company salesman told us a single application would provide immediate pain relief.  We thought, "yeah, sure.  Another snake-oil salesman."  So Connie bared her frozen shoulder, I applied a layer of the gel, and within seconds her pain had lessened noticeably. We were sold.

From the company brochure:  "If you've scoured the shelves at your local store for the ultimate pain relief cream, you know that a lot of them just don't get the job done. You've tried a variety of products for muscle and joint pain relief without success; until now. Relief Rx is a new kind of relief. This proprietary blend of natural herbal ingredients gently absorbs into the skin to provide comfort when and where you need it most. Packaged for your busy lifestyle in a convenient on-the-go tube, just one generous dab of Relief Rx is what your body needs to combat muscle and joint stress."

Ingredients include white willow bark, hemp oil, aloe vera gel, and trace minerals.

Sold for $30 on line plus tax and shipping.   Available in our office for $25 plus tax.

REVISITING:

Ionic Detoxification  Foot Baths in Our Office!

For years we resisted this form of therapy thinking it too woo-woo for our patients.  Then the manufacturer showed us before and after heavy metal testing results performed on foot bath patients.  We were impressed!

Dr. Connie experiences ionic foot bath at a conference

How long are the sessions?

Sessions last 30 minutes. Patients can just sit and relax, read or doze during the session.

What will a person experience?

Nothing except a warm water foot soak during treatment.  Afterward, people may experience a pleasant tingling sensation in the feet. Most people also experience a deep relaxation effect and for some, better sleep.  Often people experience more energy and alertness and a clearing of brain fog.

How often should a person receive treatment?

Any detoxification program has a cumulative effect with repeated treatments.  However, each individual session provides benefits. We offer discount packages for people who desire sustained positive effects. Ideally, people should receive three treatments a week separated by one or two days.

What times are available for treatment?

Any time the office is open.

How much do treatments cost?

Single Session:            $50
6 Session Package:      $255 ($42.50 per treatment, a 15% discount)
12 Session Package:    $480 ($40 per treatment, a 20% discount)
* Package purchases must be paid at the time of scheduling.

Myers Cocktail:
Safe, Powerful Effective

The Myers Cocktail has been around for more than 40 years and is the most popular IV cocktail in our clinic.  Read this detailed information sheet and you will see why.

Glutathione: You've heard of it,
so here are the facts:

(Dr. Connie's comments:)

As n oted in Musings, chemosensitivity, radiofrequency sensitivity, Lyme Disease, and other multisystemic chronic conditions all have in common oxidative stress and the formation of free radicals in the body. Oxidative stress leads to mitochondrial damage, cancer, Alzheimers, Type 2 diabetes, aging and more.

Nutrients such as C, E and alpha lipoic acid are powerful antioxidants, but are destabilized after fulfilling their antioxidant functions. Glutathione restabilizes these nutrients. Glutathione is the body's master antioxidant. It is protective of immune cells, aids detoxification in the liver, slows aging, allows the body to rebuild and repair.

For these and other reasons, we offer Glutathione I.V.s in our office, often after a after Myer's Cocktail but also by itself. Patients report increased sensory awareness and feeling refreshed after a glutathione IV.

Intravenous Glutathione is our most powerful way to introduce glutathione into the body, though we do also use oral liposomal glutathione (available in our office), and oral N Acetyl Cysteine (NAC),  which is a precursor to glutathione.

About food:
Dr. Marcel's Vegan Eggplant  Pesto

-- a hit at every pot luck

Extremely easy to make

A little-known bit of information about Dr. Marcel is that he is an excellent ethnic cuisine health food chef whose services are requested at dinner parties and fundraising events.

This recipe is inspired by traditional baba ganoush, enjoyed thoughout the Middle East, Turkey and Greece.

Ingredients

-- one regular eggplant (or 4 thin Japanese egg plants)
-- 2 cloves mashed or very finely minced garlic
-- 1/4 very finely minced sweet onion
-- ¼ to 1/3 cup olive oil, more or less
-- juice of ½ lemon
-- 1 tsp tahini
-- ¼ tsp hot sauce (only for depth, not to make it hot)
-- salt and pepper
-- 3-4 drops Liquid Smoke (available at most supermarkets)
-- finely chopped parsley for garnish
-- paprika, for garnish

1. Slice egg plant into 1/4" rounds and broil until dark brown or almost black on each side. When done, remove from broiler and let cool.

2. Combine all ingredients except paprika and parsley in food processor and blend until smooth.  Transfer to ceramic bowl.

3. Drizzle a bit of olive oil on top. Garnish with paprika and parsley.  Serve at room temperature.

4.  Keeps in fridge for 4-5 days.  Remove from fridge for 1/2 hour before serving.

Guaranteed to be a hit at any gathering.

ENJOY!

Breast Thermography at
Pacific Naturopathic

- full body thermography vs. breast thermography -

thermography

I am sometimes asked whether full body thermography can substitute for breast thermography in assessing breast health. The answer is no.

Full body thermography gives an idea of which areas of the body are hotter (metabolically more active) than expected. While this can be useful information, with breast thermography we can quantify temperature differentials between correspondent areas on the left and right breast. We can see how those temperature differentials vary over time. This helps us both identify trouble areas and evaluate efficacy of therapies designed to promote breast health.

Breast thermography is offered on most Wednesdays at Pacific Naturopathic.

My Grandfather's Natural Wisdom

by Marcel Hernandez, ND
Dr. Antonio Hernández de Leon
There must be a genetic component in my choosing to be a naturopathic doctor.  My grandfather was a pharmacist in Cuba in the mid-1900s who showed major disdain for pharmaceutical medicine.

He was a member of the Cuban Naturalist Association and on May 28, 1926, he gave a keynote speech at the Association's annual meeting where he espoused the benefits of natural medicine and expressed concern about  chemical approaches to well-being. Fortunately, my father kept the transcript of his address and translated it into English.  In the coming weeks, I will continue to publish quotes from this speech.

"I advise all of you to use  pharmaceutical products as little as possible because an old maxim states, 'what is good for the liver may be bad for the spleen ."'

What We Offer  at the  Hernandez Center
for Adjunctive Cancer Care

There is light in the darkness

Our cancer patients often ask us to give them an estimate of the effectiveness of therapy at the Hernandez Center for Adjunctive Cancer Care. We respond that  our entire focus is on helping our patients stay healthy, upbeat and positive.

The truth is that the botanical and nutritional therapies we offer (including  intravenous vitamin C), although 'adjunctive' in nature, have powerful documented actions in decreasing inflammation, reducing tumor load and attacking cancer stem cells.

  Our mind/body approaches are focused on transformation of experience.  And our bodywork approaches help reduce muscular pain, resolve lymph drainage problems and relieve stress.

  The hope we offer is not that of a miraculous cure,
although we are definitely open to miracles,
but the hope of a life lived to the fullest in dignity
and understanding, for however long that may be.

Large study links sustained weight loss to reduced breast cancer risk

American Cancer Society
A large new study finds that women who lost weight after age 50 and kept it off had a lower risk of breast cancer than women whose weight remained stable, helping answer a vexing question in cancer prevention. The reduction in risk increased with the amount of weight lost and was specific to women not using postmenopausal hormones. The study appears in JNCI .

High-fructose corn syrup boosts intestinal tumor growth in mice

Baylor College of Medicine

Does sugar directly feed cancers, boosting their growth? The answer seems to be 'Yes' at least in mice according to a study led by researchers at Baylor College of Medicine and Weill Cornell Medicine. Their study, published in Science, showed that consuming a daily modest amount of high-fructose corn syrup -- the equivalent of people drinking about 12 ounces of a sugar-sweetened beverage daily -- accelerates the growth of intestinal tumors in mouse models of the disease, independently of obesity. The team also discovered the mechanism by which the consumption of sugary drinks can directly feed cancer growth, suggesting potential novel therapeutic strategies.

Other I.V. Therapies Offered at Pacific Naturopathic and the Hernandez Center

--I.V. therapy is not just for cancer patients--

Many people have already heard about intravenous vitamin C as a complementary cancer therapy to help stimulate the immune system as well as being directly cytotoxic to cancer cells. This is the most common therapy we use at the Hernandez Center for our cancer patients.

Other cocktails we offer promote brain health, assist the liver in its detoxification efforts, relieve the symptoms of chronic fatigue, help reduce stress, bring rapid relief from sinusitis, colds and flus, address immune system disorders, slow the progression of macular degeneration, reduce chronic pain and fibromyalgia and many other conditions.
