New Beginnings

When we return from spring break, there are often mixed emotions. Are we really over winter or is there still snow to come? Will we have time to get everything done before the term ends, especially since it ends in late April instead of early May? Are we seeing the light at the end of the tunnel or is it just wishful thinking following the very long month just passed? There are many signs of new things coming all around us - March Madness is beginning, President Guskiewicz has officially come on board, other leadership transitions are under way, and more exciting learning opportunities are being offered by the Vice President for Research and Innovation and others. Nominations for the OFASD 2024-2025 Fellowship programs and Learning Communities are also due on March 7 and we anticipate what the future holds as new colleagues come together for engaging discussions on important topics facing MSU and higher education. Anticipation! New beginnings! Opportunities to explore in new ways!

Honorifics/"Culture of Recognition"

Happy almost spring, Spartans! We have just passed the midway point in the semester, and I want to take this opportunity to remind and re-engage our newsletter readers around the notion of the “Culture of Recognition” at MSU. All over campus, in departments, and colleges, there are myriad opportunities to shout-out your colleagues. While Faculty and Academic Staff Development facilitates a number of internal awards, I also wanted to highlight opportunities for IDI Awards (for which nominations for 2025 open soon) and would encourage you to check out college or unit-level opportunities.

Our colleagues in the provost’s office organized an event two weeks ago to honor promotions for fixed-term and Health Professionals faculty, academic specialists, FRIB/NSCL, MSU Extension, and MSU Libraries. We acknowledge that excellence is prevalent across campus, and gatherings like these provide an opportunity to collectively celebrate these achievements.

In the upcoming weeks, nominations for various All-University Awards will become available. A separate email will be sent regarding these award opportunities, but this message aims to plant the seed early, encouraging you to contemplate nominating your colleagues.

Investing in Yourself and Your Career

Institutionally, we talk a lot about building a successful and fulfilling career. Understanding processes and strategies that support this goal is one key factor and so many of you chose to do this during the 2023-2024 Thrive sessions! If you missed this opportunity the recordings and resources from each session can be found here. We want to acknowledge the numerous colleagues who shared information, their perspectives, stories and tips over the four sessions. Hopefully, their ideas helped demystify the promotion processes a bit, and that you also have more individuals to reach out to as needed.

Special thanks to Kathy Charles, Jennie Schaeffer, and Teresa Mastin all from FASA, as well as presenters Ann Austin, Nazita Lajevardi, Ruth Nicole Brown, Chris Hogan, Kelly Hodges, Bryan Beverly, Brian Chadwick, Scott Schopieray, Mywish Maredia, Melissa Usiak, John Clements, Cori Fata Hartley, Sinem Mollaoglu, Stephen Di Benedetto, Narayanan Parameswaran, Terah Chambers, Laura Bix, and Ryan Black. A reminder also that ASAC is sponsoring an additional series of opportunities for specialists building on the Thrive session. For more information about this series or to register to attend click here.
