Remembering September 11, 2001
It has been 23 years since the September 11th attack on our country. Today we remember the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington D.C. and Flight 93 that crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. We remember the 2,977 people killed in the attacks. The 343 Firefighter/Paramedics, 23 New York Police Department Officers, 37 Port Authority Police Officers and the 3,051 children who lost parents that day.
Even though 23 years have passed, September 11, 2001, will be a day that most of us will never forget. We will remember exactly where we were and what we were doing when we heard the news of the attacks. It is a day where family, friends and loved ones mattered the most. If you were a parent what mattered the most was where your kids were and were they okay. In a society that was moving forward at lightning speed, that day made everyone slow down and appreciate what really mattered most, each other. On that day strangers helped strangers, the very thing the Fire Service was founded on. The 343 Firefighter and Paramedics that lost their lives were doing what they were trained to do, help others. Today we honor and remember all those lost that day including the thousands more that have lost their lives due to 9/11 illnesses. We remember this tragedy as an event that brought us all closer together.
On September 11, 2002, a flagpole and monument were dedicated to honor all those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The flag that was first flown on September 11, 2002, and is kept on display in the lobby of the Fire Department Administration Offices. Every year the New Berlin Fire Department members raise this flag and lower it to half-staff to remember those lost.

New Berlin Fire Station Locations
Did you know that in 2023 all Waukesha County Fire Departments went through station/apparatus renumbering? The purpose was to assign a unique number to every station and apparatus that resides in the county. These unique numbers will help to avoid confusion especially when responding to Mutual Aid calls. New Berlin Fire Department was assigned the numbers of 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11.
New Berlin Fire Stations were renumbered to the following:
- Station 1 located at 16280 W. National Avenue is now Station 7
- Station 2 located at 1711 S. SunnySlope Road is now Station 8
- Station 3 located at 5120 S. Racine Avenue is now Station 9
- Station 4 located at 5161 S. SunnySlope Road is now Station 10
- Station 11 has been reserved for possible future use
Take note that while the New Berlin Fire Department now refers to these stations as stations 7, 8, 9 and 10, station signs identifying the buildings have not been updated to reflect these changes.

Fire Prevention for 2nd Graders
Do you have a student who will be attending 2nd grade at a New Berlin School? If so, the New Berlin Fire Department is looking forward to visiting your child and teaching them about fire safety.
National Fire Prevention Week is October 6-12, 2024. This year’s theme is, “Smoke Alarms - Make Them Work For You!” New Berlin Fire will be visiting every second grade class at all schools located in New Berlin the weeks of September 30th and October 7th. The Fire Safety House will be on site at every school so kids will have a hands-on learning experience teaching them these key points.
In addition, crews will be showing them how a firefighter looks and sounds when in their turnout gear and SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) and they will get to see all the equipment/gear on our engine. They will even watch a Timon and Pumbaa Movie entitled “Wild about Safety”. And, if weather permits, our spray house will be along for them to shoot down the flames.

The New Berlin Fire Department takes part in the File of Life program. This magnetic, plastic pouch is 5" x 4" and is placed on a refrigerator door. The pouch contains a three-part, foldable card that lists: allergies, emergency contacts, medical history, occupant names and prescribed medications. The highly visible and easily accessible pouch helps emergency medical technicians, firefighters, and police officers get critical information during an emergency situation. If an occupant is unable to answer questions, for any reason, emergency personnel have all of their pertinent information readily available. Kits are available for pick up at the Public Safety Building: 16300 W. National Avenue.

RED is an acronym that stands for Remember Everyone Deployed. R.E.D. Friday was created to remind people of our heroes overseas and show that we are thinking of them. People across the country wear red ever Friday to serve as a reminder and spread the message of how important it is that we keep our troops in our thoughts.
