New Blog on Tribal and Environmental Justice Issues

in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta:

History and Current Perspectives

The Delta Stewardship Council is pleased to share a new blog co-written by Amanda Bohl, Morgan Chow, Annie Merritt, Megan Thomson, and Meenatchi Odaiyappan following the release of the public review draft of the tribal and environmental justice issue paper.

“Addressing environmental justice requires understanding, acknowledging, and working in partnership to address historical wrongs that have resulted in inequitable distributions of environmental harms and benefits today; promoting a fair and open governance process that all community members can participate in; and ensuring that those who are most burdened and/or were historically marginalized are represented in environmental decision-making in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta,” the authors write.

Commenting on the Draft

The draft tribal and environmental justice issue paper is open for public comment until November 4, 2024. The draft presents the Council's understanding of tribal and environmental justice issues in and around the Delta and recommends actions to better address those issues within the scope of the Council's mission, authority, and influence.

More details, including comment instructions and information sheets, are available on our environmental justice web page.

About the Council

The Council works to advance California’s coequal goals for the Delta – a more reliable statewide water supply and a resilient Delta ecosystem – in a manner that protects and enhances the unique characteristics of the Delta as an evolving place where people live, work, and recreate.

We carry out this mission by implementing the Delta Plan, an enforceable long-term sustainable management plan, to ensure coordinated action in the region at the federal, state, and local levels.
