A Conversation with Folk Music Legend Jonathan Edwards

Thursday, Jan. 21
7:00-8:30 PM.
Open to the community
Register Here.

Before 1971's "Sunshine" established Jonathan Edwards as an acoustic folksinger whose songs combined pop melodies, country roots, and first-rate guitar picking, Jonathan struggled to find his place in the East Coast's folk scene. "[I'd play] six 40-minute sets, six nights a week, every week," he remembers, adding, "but that's where you learn your craft… and how to cook Ramen noodles."
In this 'Conversation with...' Jonathan will talk about his life in music, including his songs, his travels and lessons he has learned along the way during his 50 years 'in the business.'

This event is sponsored by MCA and is open and free for everyone to attend.
The Catholic Jewish Dialogue of Collier County invites the community to attend:

The mission of the Catholic-Jewish Dialogue is to engage Catholics and Jews in understanding our past history and advancing the cause of mutual understanding and appreciation of our differences, as well as our commonalities.

We’ll be featuring friends and former colleagues, Dr. Elaine Solowey and David Lehrer of the Arava Institute for Environmental Studies in Israel, to talk about the miracle story of how Dr. Solowey was able to recreate the long extinct native Judaean Date Palm, which just this past year produced fruit. For those not in the know, when Israel is written about as “a land flowing with milk and honey,” the honey being referred to is the honey extracted from the native Judaean date, and no one has known what that tasted like for thousands of years…until now.
In case you want to know a little bit more about the story, here’s a video.

The Jewish Historical Society of SWFL continues to celebrate 2021 Florida Jewish HIstory Month
Jan 27 @ 2 p.m. with the premier of the next film in The Southwest Florida Jewish Pioneers series - Gene Goodman, The Song Meister.

At 104, Gene Goodman is virtually a charter member of a small, elite group of music publishers. Abe Olman Publisher Award recipient, Mr. Goodman was inducted into Songwriters Hall of Fame and is the man who brought you countless classics, like Frank Sinatra’s “That Old Feeling,” the immortal “I’ll Be Around,” recorded by the Mills Brothers, and that favorite Christmas song “I Saw Mummie Kissing Santa Claus.” Although never trained as a musician, like his famous older brother, clarinetist Benny, Gene’s music publishing career spanned seven decades. In this intimate interview captured last summer, he reminisces about his songwriting and much more from his Pelican Bay home. Discussion and Q&A will follow.

This event is brought to you by Naples Depot Museum of The Collier County Museums. Free Admission.
Attendees have a choice of attending virtually or at the Naples Depot Museum, social distancing rules apply.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Wednesday, January 27th

The Holocaust Museum & Cohen Education Center will commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day with a unique virtual program. It will include a tribute to local Survivors, as well as music selections from the Terezin Music Foundation. The highlight of the program will be the unveiling of the unique, skylight-powered solar calendar on the “Liberation Wall” in the Rissa and Richard Grossman Reflection Room in the Museum. This calendar feature won an AIA design award for Museum architect David Corban. Lines on the “Liberation Wall” at different heights mark dates that concentration camps were liberated. The skylight uses the sun to highlight an individual date on its solar noon. The first date on the Liberation Wall is January 27, the date that Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet Forces. Join us via Zoom on Wednesday, January 27 from 12pm – 1pm to watch. RSVPs are required to receive the Zoom link. Please click here to RSVP.

We will also be offering the public complimentary Museum admission on International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Museum Hours are 1:00pm to 4:30pm, with the last visitor entry at 3pm. As capacity is limited, we recommend you pre-purchase your timed entry tickets. Click here to reserve your admission or visit our website at www.HMCEC.org.
