New Changes at CAIR-Sacramento Valley
|
Assalamu Alaikum (Peace Be Upon You),
I have been honored to serve as the President of the Executive Committee at CAIR Sacramento Valley for the past 2 years. I have watched the organization grow tremendously, expanding staff, programs and services to the community. Throughout these tough times of rising Islamophobia, CAIR Sacramento Valley has been on the front lines, challenging elected officials and candidates when they incite hateful rhetoric, engaging the media on issues affecting the Muslim community, and building and strengthening relationships with the larger community to promote justice and mutual understanding.
It is my pleasure to introduce the new Executive Committee President of CAIR Sacramento Valley, Eyas Abdeen. Eyas Abdeen is a business professional with over 12 years of experience in the financial sector and six years in the software and web programming industry. Currently, he is an investment and corporate finance consultant. He has been an active member of the Sacramento community for over two decades. He currently serves on Al-Arqam Islamic School board of trustees as the CFO since 2011. Eyas Abdeen holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Master of Science in Finance with emphasis in investment management. Currently, he is working on a Doctor of Business Administration at Golden Gate University, with emphasis on finance and investment risk management. In his spare time he enjoys reading, tennis and cycling. Eyas has demonstrated phenomenal leadership during his time on the CAIR-SV Executive Committee as a
board member and treasurer. I look forward to watching the organization continue to grow and thrive under his leadership.
CAIR Sacramento Valley has an excellent team serving on the Executive Committee.

Beaten | Tortured | Imprisoned | Shot
When:
Thursday, April 7, 2016, 7 pm
At 27 years of age, Mohamed Soltan, was wrongfully incarcerated by the Egyptian authorities for 21 months, 16 of which he was on hungerstrike. He began a hunger-strike in protest and became the longest hunger-striker in Egyptian prisoner history. He was nearly on his deathbed, having lost over half of his body-mas and was constantly in and out of prison hospitals, but was firm in his hunger-strike.
Before all this, Mohamed was a carefree Ohio State alum who loved the Buckeyes, basketball, and his family. He was arrested after moving to Egypt in 2012 to help his mother fight against cancer. Mohamed was detained from his home, when they weren't even looking for him. Mohamed was sentenced to life in prison on trumped up charges. Not a shred of evidence was been brought against him.

CAIR-MI Concerned about Anti-Islam, Anti-Immigrant Messages at University
|
|
The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) expressed concern about anti-Islam and anti-immigrant graffiti on the campus of the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor.
Messages including "StopIslam" and "Trump 2016" and "Build the Wall" were written in chalk in a central location of the campus in which students congregate.
"We are concerned that these recent anti-Islam and anti-immigrant messages are creating an environment in which some students, teachers and other university faculty members feel unsafe on campus," said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid.
"We encourage anyone who has information about these messages to immediately contact the university's Department of Public Safety."
Walid noted that the intolerant and xenophobic rhetoric coming from GOP presidential candidates has raised concerns among Muslim students at the University of Michigan and other campuses throughout the state.
|
That may explain the Internet's reaction to a report that San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies detained 17 men of Middle Eastern descent after receiving calls of multiple shots fired in a remote area of the High Desert.
"Based on the information deputies obtained in the field there is no evidence to show these men are part of any known terrorist cells or groups," sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Bachman said. "We understand that people are nervous, but we're doing our due diligence to protect our community, everyone in our community."
A popular website
Snopes.com, which tasks itself to confirm or reject rumors and urban legends, claims the reports of terrorist activity in Apple Valley and a larger media cover-up is false.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations in California isn't surprised that some groups would use this incident to incite anti-Muslim sentiment since current U.S. presidential candidates are using the same fear tactic in their campaigns.
