Hesed House

Because everyone deserves dignity.
Hesed House's mission is to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless and give people the chance to hope again. It is a national model for ending homelessness - one person, one family at a time.   Almost 1,000 people (including 188 children) are served each year through Hesed House's shelter and three housing programs.

Pictured here are Alice May,  Administrative Assistant, and  Ryan Dowd,  Executive Director of Hesed House.

Hesed House received a grant from the Community Foundation for a new security and monitoring system that keeps all of their clients and staff safe both outside and inside the building.

Introducing New Funds
Several New Funds Established Within CFFRV
The Bishop William H. Bonner Scholarship Fund was created by Bishop Bonner's granddaughter to ensure his legacy of love and giving continues. Bishop William Haven Bonner was born in 1921 in Arkansas. In 1942, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Mae Green, and the couple had four children. In 1949, Bonner moved his family to Aurora, Illinois and established the Greater Mount Olive Church Of God In Christ. In 1982, Aurora Mayor Jack Hill renamed the street the church is on to Bonner Avenue. Bishop Bonner won several awards and accolades, including an honorary doctorate from the Trinity Hall Theological Seminary, and the Bishop William H. Bonner Park in Aurora was named in his honor. He was a pastor for seventy-two years and will be remembered for his constant giving. One of his favorite phrases was, "Giving is receiving."

The Keyes2Life Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to high school seniors who have an interest in pursuing a health career and are dedicated to improving the communities in which they live. This dedication is demonstrated by providing letters of recommendation as well as an original community project which answers the question, "What are your Keyes2Life?" The Keyes2Life Scholarship was created by Dr. Corpia Keyes, who currently practices as an Internal Medicine Physician. Dr. Keyes is a resident of the Fox River Valley community and provides in home services to individuals who would otherwise not be able to remain in the comfort of their own homes.  She is dedicated to medicine, education, community and helping others accomplish goals once thought unattainable.  This scholarship will provide financial assistance to our aspiring youth and empower them to take the first step in impacting the communities in which they live.

The John W. McDougal M.A.C. Scholarship Fund was created in memory of John W. McDougal by his family. It supports the McDougal Athletic Character Award, which is awarded to male athletes from West Aurora High School.  John made his mark as an outstanding football and basketball player at Salem High School. D uring his junior year, he was the captain of his basketball team which placed 3rd in the state tournament. During his senior year, John was drafted in WWII to be a member of the US Navy and then later a Marine medic.  After the war, John entered Evansville College where he lettered for three years as a halfback on the football team. After college, John  began a 40-year basketball coaching career. He coached at several high schools, including West Aurora High School. During his coaching career, he qualified for the Illinois Elite "500" club and ranks among the state's winningest head coaches with 692 victories. Following West Aurora's 1976 2nd place finish in the IHSA state tournament, John was hired to coach at Northern Illinois University, and  he guided NIU to their first NCAA tournament appearance in 1982. He is still the winningest head basketball coach in NIU history. After 10 seasons at NIU, he coached at Western Michigan University and Rockford Lutheran High School. He retired after Rockford's 1997 season.  John was named to the Hall of Fame at several high schools and universities.  He was inducted into the IBCA Hall of Fame and in 2006, he was voted to the IHSA's Centennial State Tourney "100 Legends" list.  John McDougal passed away on October 28, 2016 at the age of 92.

The Shelton Family Fund  was established in memory of Samuel Marston Shelton. The Fund provides charitable grants to local organizations and supports the Sam Shelton Scholarship Fund. Scholarships are available to St. Charles East students who will be attending an out-of-state, four-year university. Sam was born March 11, 1997. He grew up in St. Charles and graduated from East High School in 2015. A natural athlete with a competitive spirit, Sam played club as well as high school soccer. In high school, Sam developed a love for music, which became his focus by his senior year. In August 2015, Sam enrolled at the University of Colorado Boulder and he was considering sociology as his major.  In November, Sam was a passenger in a car that was hit head-on by a drunk driver. Never having regained consciousness, Sam passed away in January 2016 as a result of the traumatic injuries he sustained in the accident. Sam's friends and family remember him as a genuine, funny, and charismatic young man who brought energy and smiles everywhere he went. Sam was an effortless people person, and his kindness and curiosity knew no bounds.

The Hunter William Shodeen Memorial Fund was created as a memorial to Hunter William Shodeen by his family. Scholarships from this fund support student athletes from the Tri-City area. This fund will also support area non-profits working in the field of mental health. Hunter was a 2008 graduate of Geneva High School where he excelled in many sports. He graduated in 2013 from Northern Illinois University with a BS in Political Science. Hunter began his career in Washington, D.C. as a Liaison in Congressman Randy Hultgren's office. He served as Kane County Field Office Manager for Bruce Rauner's campaign. Hunter most recently worked as Legislative Liaison for Illinois Commerce Commission. He was fun-loving and made friends easily and loved spending time with his family and friends. Hunter was a wonderful son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, cousin and friend and will be greatly missed.
