Meet New City Manager Peter Jankowski
At the council meeting on July 12, Peter Jankowski was officially confirmed and ratified as our new city manager. On July 18, City Clerk Tracy Beck swore him into office.

Peter comes to us from the Town of Freetown, Massachusetts, the Office of Community Services in the City of Las Vegas, and the town of Cave Creek, AZ.
Peter has 23+ years of municipal experience as a Town Manager, Town Administrator, Counselor, Deputy Director, Treasurer, Planning Board, Finance Committee Member, County and Budget Committee, Trustee, and State Representative.

He received a Doctorate of Law from Franklin Pierce School of Law in New Hampshire and a Bachelor's Degree in Resource Economics/Political Science at University of New Hampshire. He is a licensed attorney with a vast knowledge of municipal administrative law and collective bargaining negotiations.

"I am so excited to come to Mesquite," Peter said with great enthusiasm.

We are all excited to have you here. Welcome!
I hope you will join me in expressing gratitude to Andy Barton for all the work he did for the city last year and in years past as our city manager. I personally have learned a great deal from Andy and admire his leadership style.

I also thank Mayor Al Litman and City Attorney Bryan Pack who served as interim city managers, along with Deputy City Manager Martine Green who kept all the wheels and cogs in motion. It takes commitment and talent to keep the city running well during this transitional phase. The employees in our city have done just that.
Look What's Coming to Mesquite Plaza!
Be on the lookout soon for a model of the Boxabl Casita, one of the latest solutions for affordable homes. It will be parked at the Mesquite Plaza for a limited time.

The casita starts out at 375 square feet of living space, but square footage can be added for larger families.

Anthony Phillips, President and Realtor of The Luxury Companies in Las Vegas, has been working with city staff on this concept for our city. He plans to install a temporary model at Mesquite Plaza, 312 Mesquite Boulevard, to allow the public to view the casita. These dwellings are pre-manufactured at the factory and set up on location in very little time.

Take a look at their website at www.boxabl.com.
Community Health Services at the Mesquite Salvation Army
Last week I had the opportunity to meet Community Health Services Coordinator Lindsey Poston in her office at the Mesquite Salvation Army Family Resource Center.

Bill Ennis, Director of the Resource Center, had previously worked with Lindsey on the CARES Housing Assistance Program (CHAP) and recommended her for the Community Health Worker (CHW) position with PACT Coalition (Prevention, Advocacy, Choices, and Teamwork). Lindsey started her position in February and quickly obtained her CHW II certification from the Nevada Certification Board.

The program is a two-year grant-funded position with the option of being renewed.

Lindsey’s first project has been to develop a handy go-to booklet of information about various services here in Mesquite and nearby areas. It is currently being printed and will soon be available at the Salvation Army as well as our recreation center, library, welcome center, and other places around town.
Lindsey's other priorities include providing social and emotional support for youth through the development of a program like the Boys and Girls Club of America. She is also collaborating with other social and mental health agencies to get people the help they need, as well as gathering statistics focused on increasing mental health services in our area.

With a bachelor's degree in health care management, Lindsey is working toward a master's degree in social work. She recently earned certifications to facilitate informal group sessions designed to help people by talking about their circumstances and learning better coping strategies.

Thank you, Lindsey and Bill, for being here for Mesquite.

Annual Maintenance Time at the City
Athletics and Leisure Services Department Director Nick Montoya reminds us the Recreation Center and the Heritage Museum will be closed from August 29 through September 5 for annual maintenance, repairs, cleaning, and special projects. Both facilities will reopen on September 6. (Recreation Center at 5:00 a.m., Heritage Museum at 10:00 a.m.).

Thank you, Nick, and your staff for keeping the facilities top-notch!
When is it ever a good thing to get dirty? When you're helping the community.
Mesquite Rotary Club will be holding its annual Mudd Volleyball tournament on Saturday, September 17 behind the Eureka Casino Resort.

Join in the fun as teams battle it out in the "mud" with a chance to win the first place trophy. Four pits of Mesquite's version of mud will be ready and waiting, so plan to get down and get dirty for some good causes. All proceeds will remain in the Mesquite community to benefit our local food banks, Salvation Army, beautification projects, student reading program, scholarships for area graduates, and the list goes on.

Volunteers are also needed on the day of the games. Previous experience is not necessary for assistance as a line judge, referee, and scorekeeping. Any amount of time is greatly appreciated.

Lastly, my husband and I spent some needed vacation time away from Mesquite's sizzling temperatures by going to the cool San Juan Islands in Washington State. But it's always good to come home!
