As previously noted, on Jan. 1, 2025, new Rules governing client identification and verification come into effect for Alberta lawyers. These Rules will expand how lawyers can effectively verify their client’s identity and how they can use both agents and authentication technology to safeguard clients and their money and prevent money-laundering. 

To help lawyers better understand their obligations for client identification and verification, the Law Society has created two resources that detail the new virtual verification process and compare the virtual process to in-person identification and verification.

Lawyers are also welcome to register for our upcoming webinar on client identification and verification on Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2025. Please note that this session is filling up so register now to hold your spot.

Holiday Office Closure

Please note that the Law Society office will be closed from noon on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2024, through Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025. In-person reception will be closed for the full day on Dec. 24, but Customer Service is still available via phone or email until noon.

Our office will re-open for regular business on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025.

Court of King's Bench Announcements

Announcement from Court and Justice Services Regarding Filing During the Holiday Closure

The Court of King's Bench Clerk's Office will be closed from Dec. 24, 2024 to Jan.1, 2025 inclusive.

The Clerk's Office will be accepting email and digital filing submissions during the holiday closure. Please note that documents received after Dec. 23, 2024 will not be processed until Jan. 2, 2025 or later.

Family Docket Court – 2025 Schedule 

Effective Jan. 2, 2025, the Court will schedule one additional Family Docket Court date per week, in Calgary and Edmonton. Family Docket Court will be scheduled on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday of each sitting week.
