MAITLAND, Fla. - The City of Maitland is very pleased to announce that Dan Matthys has joined City staff as Community Development Director.
"We're delighted to welcome Dan, a veteran planner with over two decades of experience in municipal government and the private sector," said City Manager Sharon M. Anselmo. "We look forward to his leadership as we all work together to build Downtown Maitland."
In his new role as Community Development Director, Matthys will provide leadership to the Community Development Department and supervise its day-to-day operations. Specifically, he will provide oversight to the Community Redevelopment Agency, Planning & Zoning, Mapping & GIS, Building Safety and Code Compliance.
Matthys comes to the City from the Town of Cary, North Carolina, where he worked as a Development Liaison. He assisted residents, customers, and developers through the development, planning, permitting, and inspections processes. Prior to this position, he worked in Cary's Planning Department in a variety of roles including Communication & Information Planner and the Planning Manager for Current Planning in the Department. He has worked as a planner almost his entire career, both in the private and public sectors in Central Florida, North Carolina, and Texas.
Matthys began his service to municipal planning in 1996 as a planner for Polk County. He subsequently served as a planner with Bowyer-Singleton & Associates in Orlando, and returned to municipal government. He served in various roles including Currency Manager and Deputy Planning Director for the Osceola County Planning Department and Director of the Seminole County Planning & Development Department. In 2006, he began serving the residents of the Town of Cary, North Carolina.
"My family and I are thrilled to return to Central Florida, our home," said Matthys. "One of my passions is assisting citizens and customers navigate through governmental processes. I'm grateful for the opportunity to serve Maitland residents and I'm looking forward to the public input process as we all collaborate to thoughtfully redevelop Downtown Maitland."
Matthys earned his Bachelor's of Science degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Texas State University, and received his Certified Public Manager from Florida State University. In addition, Dan is a Certified Planner through the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and is an active member of the American Planning Association (APA) and the Florida-Carolina Chapter (FAPA).
Matthys is passionate about cardiac health. He is the founder of Advancingtheheart.org, a national 501(c)(3) organization, that educates, advocates, and empowers lives with a mission to "advance the heart."
