Probation + Strategies for Youth Hosts 2nd Cohort Of Police Training on Positive Youth Interactions for Local Officers in Contra Costa County

Officers from the cities of Concord, Pittsburg and El Cerrito police departments attended a 4-day Train-the-Trainer cohort training event on April 1-4th at the Probation Department where they completed 28 hours of training on best strategies for teaching their peer officers on important principles and strategies that promote positive interactions and reduces conflict with youth. Throughout the four days, these newly trained police instructors in the evidence-based Policing the Teen Brain training curriculum, learned about de-escalation techniques with youth from a retired law enforcement officer, learned about adolescent brain development from a clinical psychologist, and met with local youth-serving organizations working with youth in their jurisdictions.

Strategies for Youth (SFY) – a nationally recognized law enforcement training provider on youth-police interactions, in partnership with Probation’s Office of Reentry & Justice (ORJ), has been offering this training to all interested Contra Costa County police departments since 2024 and will continue until 2026. Police agencies can also attain POST-certification for ongoing training offerings through this initiative.

This training opportunity was made possible through federal grant funding from Congressman Mark DeSaulnier’s office making the training events and course materials free of charge to all participating agencies.

Since 2024, 84 officers from eight local law enforcement agencies, including our county’s Probation Department, Sheriff’s Office and BART PD, have been trained by SFY’s law enforcement training coaches. Future coached trainings to patrol officers are currently being scheduled for the remaining year.

For more information about Strategies for Youth’s training curriculum and other community resources, check out their website at https://strategiesforyouth.org/. To learn more about Probation’s training initiative to improve local youth-police interactions, contact the ORJ at admin@orj.cccounty.us.

Public Defenders Office Seeks Community Input on the Holistic Intervention Partnership - June 9th!

The Contra Costa Office of the Public Defender invites you to a community meeting on Monday, June 9, from 3:00-4:30 PM [Zoom link] to discuss our Holistic Intervention Partnership (HIP).

HIP is a public/private collaborative project that helps reduce justice involvement and improve the health and stability of people with complex behavioral health needs who have been arrested for low-level offenses. This summer, the Public Defenders Office is planning to submit a new proposal for state funding for HIP, and would love to hear from you about how HIP can advance safety and health by better meeting the needs of some of the most vulnerable people in Contra Costa County.

HIP was launched in Contra Costa in 2019 with the support of a state grant; in 2022, a second state grant allowed us to expand HIP’s services to reach more people, more holistically, especially by enhancing resources to provide housing and housing navigation support. In preparation for a new proposal, the Public Defenders Office would love to hear from you about needs and opportunities to better serve this population.

To attend, please join by Zoom on Monday, June 9, at 3:00 PM. [Zoom link] .
