Five-day Closure to Convert KY 338 at I-71/75 to Double Crossover Diamond Interchange
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is excited to announce that the new double crossover diamond interchange (DCD) at Richwood Road (KY 338) and I-71/75 is set to open next week, weather permitting. The new configuration is expected to help improve safety, reduce travel delays, and provide better connections to destinations and businesses for this rapidly-growing area, according to KYTC District 6 Chief District Engineer Bob Yeager.

To get the new interchange ready for travel, a few final preparations are needed. That means there will be some major temporary closures and changes coming to Richwood Road (KY 338) at I-71/75. Below is the tentative schedule – as always with road construction, work is weather permitting and subject to change. Follow us on social media and visit our website for the most up-to-date information.

We encourage drivers to find alternate routes, but there will be sign detours in place along KY 338 for local traffic.
Closure Schedule (Weather Permitting)

Tuesday, July 11 – Monday, July 17:
  • Beginning at 8 p.m. Tuesday, the inner portion of the interchange will be closed to all traffic.
  • No through traffic will be permitted on Richwood Rd.
  • ALL on/off ramps will remain open with limited access.

By Monday, July 17, at 5 a.m., Richwood Road and all access ramps to and from the interchange will be reopened, and the new interchange pattern will be in place.
What does this mean for me?

During this extended closure, there is no through traffic on Richwood Road in that area. Additionally, if you’re driving eastbound on Richwood Rd. toward I-71/75, you will not be able to take the northbound ramp. You will be required to enter I-71/75 southbound.

If you’re driving westbound on Richwood Rd. toward I-71/75, you will not be able to take the southbound ramp. You will be required to enter I-71/75 northbound.

If it’s difficult to picture that, take a look at the graphic below. This shows in green which ramps and sections of the road will be open and in orange which will be closed. Delays will likely occur, so please take an alternate route if possible.
What’s a Double Crossover Diamond anyway?

The point of a DCD is to eliminate left turns against oncoming traffic. Traffic follows clearly defined curbs, signs, pavement markings and state-of-the-art signals to move briefly over to the left side of the road. Drivers continuing through the interchange cross back to the right side of the road, hence the name “double crossover.”

There are two other DCDs in the Northern Kentucky area. One is at Graves Rd. and I-275, and the other is at Mt. Zion Rd. and I-71/75.

The Cabinet team appreciates your patience! We realize these closures are inconvenient, but we’re confident they will be worth the effort once the DCD is open.
