Dr. Stofko, author and East Haddam Historical Society historian, will delight the audience with intriguing stories of East Haddam residents. You won't want to miss this popular event!
This year's mysteries include “Whatever Happened to the Oliver Ellsworth?” The steamship Oliver Ellsworth first plied the Connecticut River in 1825, and continued for most of the 19th century. It was chosen to carry the Marquis de Lafayette on his visit to the United States. The ship was retrofitted into a freighter, but whatever became of it? Did it sink? Where did it end its days? The Museum has a beautiful oil painting of the ship as it passed Lord’s Island in the Connecticut River.
Then there is “The Mysterious Disappearance of Matilda Cone.” There were many stories and rumors about her whereabouts during the 1800s. She disappeared from East Haddam. Was she ever found? Was she alive and living somewhere else?
And finally, a “Close Call for Three Men at Hadlyme.” Dick Phelps was in charge of transporting the mail in Hadlyme in the late 1800s. While transporting the mail across the frozen Connecticut River in March 1895 in a horse-drawn wagon, disaster struck. Find out what happened on that fateful day.
