The N.C. National Guard hosted a change of ceremony for the Adjutant General of North Carolina, at Joint Force Headquarters in Raleigh, on Dec. 16.

New Wardens Named at Pasquotank and Orange Correctional

The Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice has named James Vaughan as the new warden of the Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City and Amanda Cobb as the new warden of the Orange Correctional Center in Hillsborough. 

SHP Command Staff Visits Coach K

Meet the Office of Policy & Planning

There’s a group of four Department of Public Safety employees who quietly go about making the department more efficient. Their work on policies and procedures streamlines processes for the department and its divisions. The Office of Policy and Strategic Planning is led by Mike Daniska and provides oversight and coordination for development, maintenance and management of departmental policies.

Central Prison Over the Years

Ground was broken on an imposing stone fortress in Raleigh 150 years ago as “convicts” wielded shovels and chipped the granite blocks from a nearby quarry to build 30-foot walls. It took 14 years to finish the job started on Jan. 6, 1870. Central Prison has since been in continuous service since it opened in 1884 at a cost of $1.25 million.

Juvenile Justice Makes Room for Older Juveniles Following Raise the Age

One expected, planned-for impact of increasing the age of juvenile jurisdiction to include 16 and 17-year old children is the need to provide this population with proper secure custody spaces, when appropriate. Through renovation of existing older facilities, and the development of local partnerships, the Juvenile Justice Section is prepared to meet this need, less than two months following the implementation of “Raise the Age."
