GOOD TROUBLE

Below is a news story reporting on the performance of A Mother of a Revolution, the instrumental work barred by the Watertown School Board. The board’s decision sparked an outpouring of response across the community. In attempting to silence the work, the controversy instead broadened awareness of it — creating new opportunities for people to engage with its music, message, and artistic purpose. Now, because of the actions of six of the seven board members, thousands more people will become acquainted with both the music and the history and meaning behind it.

Composer Omar Thomas wrote: "Let these kids play this piece. Let them be the stewards for our shared humanity. Let them remind you of why it is that we're here. The Arts lead the way."

University of Wisconsin–Platteville

In a world where people spend so much time online, communication practices have shifted, often becoming depersonalized and misinterpreted. Learn a brief history of effective communication strategies and identify some basic elements to help your personal interactions. Dr. Zorea includes practical recommendations on how we can adapt our communication into better digital habits, with the goals of:

• Increasing our communication skills (generally);
• Developing strategies for discussing difficult topics in a civil manner; and
• Encourageing a more constructive attitude for managing uncivil (or potentially hostile) interactions with others who strongly disagree.

This skill-building evening is part of our Disagree Better series.
