PMP Pals Conference Recap |
ACPMP Volunteer/Board Member Therese Surges (third from left) represented ACPMPRF at the PMP Pals Conference this October in Monterey, CA.
The program was informative and thoughtful. The line-up of speakers gave both patients and caregivers positive information and ideas to carry forward in daily life for the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of each.
This year's focus was on mental health while fighting cancer. Speakers included Dr. Laura Lambert from UMass and Dr. Tessa Sugarbaker, Marriage and Family Therapist, OB-GYN.
SuperBowl Champion
Brendon Ayanbadejo
gave the audience such good advice on how to embrace today. Check out the video here.
Therese was grateful for the opportunity to share our organization with those not familiar and to greet old and new friends in the process.

Hair Today - Gone Tomorrow
|
After George Haskin was diagnosed with PMP in 2014, he and his wife Dawn became advocates for the disease. They wanted to make a difference and raise awareness and funds for the ACPMP Research Foundation.
Dawn came up with the idea "Hair Today - Gone Tomorrow", initially pledging to shave her head if she raised $10,000. She decided to hold an event so others could witness the head shaving, which turned into a celebration and silent auction.
Midway through the effort, someone offered to pay more if she did not shave her head so she put it to a vote and allowed donors to determine the fate of her hair. This vote was kept secret until the final event.
In-kind donations were received from dozens of local organizations for the Silent Auction. Over sixty people attended the event in mid-August (the three year anniversary of George's diagnosis). The online fundraiser successfully raised $15,000, with the auction adding another $4,000.
The vote resulted in Dawn cutting and donating her long locks to Pantene Wigs for cancer patients instead of shaving her head. This event also raised $500 for PMP Pals Network. "We are thrilled to have supported two PMP organizations and a general cancer organization through this one effort" said Dawn.
Congratulations and thank you to the Haskins and their supporters for achieving 191% of goal. Such a fun way to raise awareness and funds for a Appendix Cancer and PMP. Click
