New Faces at Pipestone!
Hello Everyone,
So we’re officially two years into the pandemic, and while we’ve experienced many difficulties with supply chain and lead time issues, we’re still here and still providing valves and equipment for critical water projects. We’ve taken a number of measures to improve on our end: we’re continuing to add personnel with extensive experience in the water industry who have been able to hit the ground running for us; we’ve been working with our manufacturers on ways to better forecast delays that might arise due to this special set of circumstances the world now faces, day to day; we’ve also been streamlining our own processes here at Pipestone to better serve our customers; and, not the least of which, we’ve been adding much higher numbers to our stock orders, so that when you ask for the valves you know we stock, we can say more often than not, “Yes, we have that in Golden.” Pipestone is committed to doing everything we can to make your projects go as smoothly as possible, and we hope to represent a bit of normalcy in our newly chaotic world.
David "Kevlar" Ketelaar
"Kevlar" is our newly acquired Inside Sales & Estimator for Pipestone Equipment, with a rock solid background of over 15 years of experience within the pipe, valve & fitting industry, and he's also a lifelong enthusiast of guitar, recording & guitar building.
He honed his craft at Music Theory & Technique at American Piano Schools in Colorado for several years, and went on to teach there for over 12 years. Continuing to share his love of music, Kevlar still teaches and collects more guitars than he’ll ever need.
Mary Grahek
Mary grew up in Southern Colorado, went to college on Western Slope where she spent ½ her life living in the mountain/ski towns. She moved to the Boulder area 20 years ago, and has now lived in Golden for the past 13 years. She has a very wide expanse of industry knowledge, as she has worked in customer service, as well as Accounting roles.
Pete White
Pete has lived in Big Sky Country (Billings) since 1975 and has worked within the waterworks industry for most of the past 20 years.
When not at work, he spends quality time with family and friends, gets out as often as possible to camp, hike, fish, bow hunt, explore, ride, and play an occasional round of golf.
He is fascinated by mechanical things and likes to work with his hands. He's restored many classic muscle cars & cool old trucks, including a recently completed 3-year restoration of my 1972 Chevy K20 pickup.
Tony Wankum
Tony was born and raised in Littleton Colorado and graduated from CSU as an Engineer in 2011. He has 10 years of pump experience and is looking forward to the next ten years (or longer!) in valves. He is a middle sibling, a proud father, a loving husband, and seldom a stranger for very long.

60inch Butterfly Valve for Conduit 12
In the 1920s, Denver Water's predecessor constructed several large-diameter transmission mains. One of these transmission mains, designated Conduit 12, remains in use today; however, in 2015, a major highway expansion project in Central Denver required a 700-foot section of Conduit 12 to be re-routed. The re-routed section includes a 60" diameter section of piping going into the ground directly east of Colorado Heights University.
Pipestone Equipment is providing a 60" Val-Matic Butterfly Valve with an AUMA GS Worm Gearbox to replace a much larger, and more cumbersome, gate valve. PE provided startup services and a certificate of proper installation (or COPI) to BT Constructors once the valve was installed correctly, inspected and tested.
Startup testing includes opening and closing the 60" valve (using a drill motor and square-nut adapter) several times, checking the bolt torques on the seat retaining rings and making sure the hard stops in the actuator are set correctly. The valve and actuator weigh approximately 13,000lbs. The entire section of pipe going into the ground weighs around 30,000 pounds.
Look on Denver Water's website for a video describing the project. One interesting coincidence about this project is that the original riveted pipe was furnished by Thompson Pipe & Steel Company of Denver, Colorado. Northwest Pipe Company acquired Thompson in 1996, and the replacement pipe was manufactured 90 years later in the same facility.
