New Findings: How Soil Phosphorus Shapes Root Growth

Phosphorus is abundant in soil, but most of it is in the mineral form, so it is not readily accessed by crop roots. At NDS and MFCC, Dr. Roli Wilhelm from Purdue University shared new research monitoring how the plant’s fixed carbon flows into and out of the roots to help the crop access soil P.

He showed how a plant’s root system feeds both mycorrhizae and helper bacteria, giving them the energy needed to extract P from minerals and deliver it as a nutrient to the crop. Furthermore, he highlighted other recent research demonstrating how different farm management practices affect those important root-associated microbes and their ability to improve crop yield potential.

On this week's episode of "Upon Further Review", Dr. Brian Gardener dives deeper into Dr. Wilhelm's research to explain what his findings on the inverse relationship of soil P and root growth mean for farmers.

Avoid the Cycle of Doom - Part 2

One of the most popular presentations at the National Dealer Seminar this year was the discussion on Avoidable Yield Robbers led by Maximum Farming Implementation Consultant Delk Crosier. These are common, recurring, and can limit a farmer’s success.

Avoiding the six yield robbers that make up the "Cycle of Doom" may make the difference in retaining customers next year. The Red Zone is featuring one per week to help you deter clients from making these mistakes.

This week’s yield robber topic is, “Ignore Soil Management.”

Ignore Soil Management

The Issue: It all starts with ST/MZ and properly evaluating where soils are and managing from there.

The Solution: Use the Maximum Farming Recommendation ranges as a starting point with your customers. Help them proof it on their soils and make adjustments.
