New Form I-9 Becomes Mandatory November 1


A completely revised Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification has been published and companies must begin using it November 1, 2023.


The new form is 12 pages and contains substantial changes. Remember to change out the old Form I-9 in any Driver Qualification File packets you may stock.

FMCSA Gives More Time to Comment on Potential Carrier Safety Rating Revamp


Overdrive- Trucking is getting more time to comment on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) information-seeking advance notice of proposed rulemaking related to a potential revamp of its carrier rating system.


FMCSA is seeking public comments on how it can develop a new methodology to determine when a motor carrier is not fit to operate in interstate commerce.

FMCSA Extends Protections for Under-21 Harvest Haulers


Freight Waves- An association of farm-service harvest crews — who are provided an exception under the law from certain CDL qualifications, including a requirement that drivers hauling across state lines be at least 21 — asked the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration in March to renew a five-year exemption from state restrictions.

Once Again California Tells a Court AB5 Isn’t Disrupting Trucking in State


Freight Waves- With the next freight-related legal battle in California centered on a request for a new injunction to block independent contractor law AB5 from being implemented against trucking, California is arguing that AB5 is not having an impact in that sector.

CTA Files Lawsuit to Block CARB's Diesel Truck Ban


Commercial Carriers Journal- The California Trucking Association has filed a lawsuit in a federal court seeking to halt the California Air Resources Board’s latest regulations aimed at banning diesel trucks in the state.


The lawsuit challenges CARB’s Advanced Clean Fleets (ACF) rule that requires all new medium- and heavy-duty vehicles sold or registered in the state to be zero-emission by 2036 and requires all trucks to be zero-emission by 2042.

The Unified Carrier Registration period is officially open for 2024. Use UCR's Decision Tree to check whether your business is required to register and, if so, register by January 1, 2024.

Good news: Fees have been reduced from the previous year.


CVSA Takes 2,375 Rigs off Road during 2023 Brake Safety Week


The Trucker-  Inspectors in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. conducted 18,875 commercial motor vehicle inspections Aug. 20-26 for the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Brake Safety Week.


Of the total commercial motor vehicles inspected, 2,375 (12.6%) were removed from roadways because inspectors discovered brake-related out-of-service violations.
