LESSON:
Gingerbread Man on the Loose?
Who should you call... Community Helpers!
So much fun! Combine the School Gingerbread Man Hunt with an introduction to community helpers.
Not only can your students go on a school GB Man hunt and become familiar with school staff (who are school community helpers.), but it is doubly fun to involve community helpers outside the school as well.
One school I know of formed a
"Gingerbread Man Apprehension Team (GMAT) and invited a police officer
to help them catch their GB Man who had "made a break for it." The Sheriff took down the missing GB Man's description from the kids as they made Missing posters. Another school found the GB Man on the Fire truck that was visiting at the end of the week.
Here's a fun article about it-

SKILLS:
Tour the Town: Map Skills
People in your Neighborhood: Community Helpers
The Gingerbread Man Loose at Christmas
not only has universal themes of kindness and giving, but it also serves as a wonderful mentor text for discussions on home and neighborhood Map Skills and Community Helpers.
In the story, the Gingerbread Man and his class make gifts to surprise their neighborhood community helpers. Some are homemade gifts like cookies and cards, and some are gifts that are "outside the box" like songs, poems, smiles, and compliments.
As they journey into town to deliver their gifts, the town illustration provides a wonderful example and introduction to home & neighborhood primary map skills.
The community helpers they meet along the way (a police lady, garbage collector, librarian, dentist, grocer, vet, barber, bookseller, doctor, florist, bank teller, baker, as well as special surprise for their teacher) demonstrate the wide range of people who make a big difference in our towns and lives with the jobs they do.
